Message from the Head of School

Dr. Steven Sherman, Head of School

Welcome to Palm Valley School! We are so pleased that you have taken an interest in our school.

We educate, nurture, and challenge our students through individualized attention and innovative teaching all in a college preparatory framework. Established in 1952, Palm Valley School offers distinct advantages as the only California Association of Independent Schools (CAIS) accredited school in the picturesque Coachella Valley. As a close-knit, independent community, we can be agile enough to adapt to unforeseen changes in the educational landscape. This was never more evident during the recent pandemic and subsequent school closures across our nation. Our students never missed a day of instruction as we seamlessly transitioned to our Distance Learning Program. While the situation is less than ideal, it provides evidence that our professional and skilled teachers can adapt to the most disruptive of circumstances.

To fully grasp the sense of community at Palm Valley School, I invite you to visit our 40 acre campus. From infants to graduating seniors, our students will leave a lasting impression on you. They each bring a variety of gifts, talents, and aspirations. Our students are supported to reach their fullest potential academically, athletically, artistically and emotionally. They are gifted artists, performers, athletes, engineers, public speakers, writers and more.

In order to provide the best education to our students, we have have a highly qualified faculty at Palm Valley School. Our teachers come from diverse backgrounds ranging from long careers in education or former careers in the private sector as working professionals, bringing experiences, knowledge, innovation, and passion to their classrooms. Over half of our Faculty hold graduate level degrees and many other awards and certifications. With small student to teacher ratios (approx. 1:12), and a focus on hands-on learning; the individualized attention and support that our faculty members give to our students is second to none.

As the Head of School, I am here to know you and support you. You will quickly find yourself engaged with other Palm Valley families and faculty members who have the same desire - to provide your child with the best academic environment. In order to create this environment, we offer a program that promotes positive student development. Our Advisory curriculum in grades 6-12 is both academic and social-emotional and helps to build strong relationships between students and their advisors, but also to develop the whole child in some of the most difficult years. Our award-winning drama and chorus programs, the variety of athletic opportunities we offer, service clubs and other academic programs ensure that all students have an opportunity to explore their diverse interests.  Our faculty, P-12, are trained in the No Bully program (www.nobully.org) to help students learn to manage conflicts in healthy ways and to gain social and emotional skills. We want to set you up for success.

There is much to celebrate this year as our Class of 2020 continues to shine and embody the Mission and Values of our school. With 100% college acceptance to some of the top schools in the nation, and a growing list of decisions for the next chapter of their academic lives, these seniors showcase the result of a Palm Valley School education. We will see our seniors attending schools such as Stanford, Columbia, Georgetown, UPenn, USC, UC Berkeley, Emory, UCLA and many more. We are so proud.

Whether it’s high-level academic curricula, diversity and inclusion, small class sizes, social emotional development, service learning, the arts, or athletics you are looking for; The Palm Valley School is a great place to consider. Our families, our faculty, and most importantly, our students, love it here. We hope that as you look through the pages of our web site, you will learn more about us, who we are, and what we have to offer your family.
