Dear Upper School Families,
It can be difficult, for families to help guide their children in choosing a college major. It is not uncommon for Upper School students, to “declare” a field of study, or a major when they apply to college. It seems so soon, to be making such big decisions, about the rest of their academic, and maybe, their professional lives.
First of all, it is important to remember that choosing a major now does not mean a student is forced to continue that course of study for the rest of their college years. Secondly, many adults end up working in fields they love, having nothing to do with what they studied in college. But some considerations are important when guiding your student towards the path of study in college.
Should your focus be earning potential? Happiness potential? Versatility? For every family, these considerations are unique.
Our alumni tend to be exceptional in the things they do. Being exceptional in what you do, turns out to be far more important than what you major in.
I found the article below to be very interesting in helping families dig through some of the data and information out there, while they decide how important it is, to major in a particular field. I hope it brings you as much peace of mind, as it did for me.
