Weekly Notes from the Head of Upper School, 9/26

Dear Upper School Families,

It’s hard for families to know what is an appropriate summer program for their student. We are often asked what types of activities students can participate in, over the summer, that will help their college admission prospects. University sponsored summer camps can be both fulfilling academic work, and also an indication to colleges that a student has a vested interest in lifelong learning, outside of the school year.

Not all summer programs are created equally, however. It’s important for families to research which programs will both give their student a fulfilling summer experience, but also be worth the sometimes large financial investment required. Pay for play academic programs, often sound like a rewarding and challenging experience. Students are often told they are “nominated” to pursue a summer experience with well-known academics and celebrities. Families should be wary of summer programs that are sponsored by recently created organizations, for-profit organizations, or programs that seem very expensive for a two or three-day conference.

Uniform Reminders
Just a reminder, navy blue bottoms are no longer an accepted part of the PVS school uniform.  Students who wear navy blue bottoms to school will be issued a uniform infraction form and asked to change.

Wine Down Wednesday - TONIGHT
On Wednesday, September 26th Acqua California Bistro at the River in Rancho Mirage and KOOL 95.9 FM are hosting a Wine Down Wednesday event from 5 pm - 7 pm. Tickets are $10 at the door and 100% of the admission proceeds benefit Palm Valley School!

Service Learning Hours Reminder
The Upper School will log all of a student’s volunteer service hours each year.  We use these total logged hours to determine eligibility for the President’s Volunteer Service Award.  However, ONLY hours earned through a NON-PROFIT, registered 501(c)3 organization, will count for the 40 hours service requirement for the school.  If you are unclear as to whether your student’s volunteer work fulfills the service-learning requirement, please ask Ms. Steinman.

8th and 9th Grade Trip to Puerto Rico
Partnering with Global Works - Travel with Purpose, our students will participate in meaningful service learning projects while experiencing some cultural and language immersion. This trip is scheduled for February 16th - 22nd. That is over the week of our mid-winter break. Deadline to register is this Friday, September 28.

Volunteers & Items Needed - Upper School Theater Production
Our award-winning Palm Valley Upper School Drama class has chosen a rollicking fun Broadway musical as its 2018 Fall production. In the first two weekends of December, we will mount our spectacular production of THE DROWSY CHAPERONE, a light-hearted and fun-filled look at the quirky world of Broadway in the 1920’s. Our energetic cast, overstocked with singing, acting, and dancing talent, is gearing up to bring to our MPR Stage a quality show that will delight the Palm Valley community.
