Weekly Notes from the Head of Upper School, 3/21

Dear Upper School Families,

This is the time of year that I sit with each family to discuss their student’s progress in the Upper School, their planned courses for the following year, their long-term goals for their time at Palm Valley, and the college admissions process. I look forward to this time of year, as it gives me an opportunity to check in with each family, and each student, and hear about their summer plans or their new interests. It also gives me an opportunity to hear any feedback that families have about their experiences in the Upper School. After 15 years, I am still not tired of talking about Palm Valley School or our students! I will be reaching out to each family to schedule a meeting and I look forward to meeting with all of you in the coming weeks. Additionally, my door is always open to any family that wants to know about my experience as a former parent, a teacher, or in my current position as Head of Upper School.

Enrollment Contracts
To clear up any confusion, completed enrollment contracts allow us to plan for what courses we will offer, and how many sections of each course we need. We use this information to conduct hiring and teaching assignments for the fall. If we do not know how many students we have returning, we risk not being able to offer all courses due to staffing issues. Because of this reason, parents are asked to return their enrollment contracts on March 1. This time of year is considered hiring season for independent schools, and if we need to hire teachers, this is when most candidates are available. Scheduling of classes will not happen for students who have not returned their enrollment contracts, and students are not guaranteed placement in their first choice classes. Additionally, per policy, if we have not received a signed enrollment contract for a student by April 1, the student will need to redo the school’s application process.
