Weekly Notes from the Head of Upper School, 2/7

Dear Upper School Families,

As we work to expand our Service Learning program, we hope to provide students with a variety of opportunities to not just participate in service to the community, but also learn about community organizing and non-profit management. We are fortunate to have ties to many wonderful charitable organizations in our community through partnerships with current and former school community members. Over the next few weeks, we will be sponsoring a clothing drive to benefit Desert Best Friend’s Closet from February 12 - March 2. This organization seeks to make professional attire available to low-income job seekers. In the words of Connie Golds, former Palm Valley School Board Chair, and Founding Director of Desert Best Friend’s Closet, “Our volunteer stylists assist with wardrobe and image consulting as well as teach low-income job seekers how and where to search for employment. And they accomplish this with clothing from your closet! Whether you are able to donate one item or ten, each article of clothing will empower our clients to look their best so they will land the job. We truly believe someone’s future is hanging in your closet!”

In addition to collecting garments for this organization, Ms. Golds will be conducting presentations for our Upper School students to teach them about the mission of her organization, the process of starting it, as well as what it takes to run a community organization such as Desert Best Friend’s Closet. This is an invaluable experience for our students, and we’re grateful to be partnering with Ms. Golds and Desert Best Friend’s Closet.
