Dear Upper School Families,
I’ve written before about how our alumni, when they come to visit, talk about how well prepared they feel, compared to their college classmates. We strive, in the Upper School, to provide a challenging, but supportive environment, in which our students can develop the hard and soft skills they will need to be successful after high school, and beyond. I found this list of skills from Clarke University to be a great way to think about the things we want our students to master before they hit the ground running in their Freshman year of college. Managing the changing nature of life in Upper School is not about shielding our students from struggle, but preparing them to meet challenges head-on, and feel confident that they can overcome what life presents to them. The only way to build this confidence is for students to experience the things we often want to protect them from, like struggle, but also anxiety, stress, commitment, and expectations. To fully prepare students for adulthood is a big commitment, powered by the partnership between school and family. We have a proven track record of preparing our students for success. It’s one of the many reasons I love working at Palm Valley School.
