Dear Upper School Families,
Teachers have a name for this time of year. We lovingly call it “DEVOLSON.” DEVOLSON, a term coined by an educator, is an acronym for Dark, Evil, Late September, October, and November. It is a fun word to say, but the concept is real. And it is not just teachers that deal with the phenomenon. This is a tough time of year for students as well. With just a few short weeks until the Thanksgiving break, the time can feel like an eternity. Students need to practice some self-care. Helping your student make good choices about how they spend their time, can also help them stave off the anxiety and stress of DEVOLSON. Self-care is not just for adults.
While it is tempting to spend the night up late, last minute studying for a quiz in the morning, adolescents need a good night’s sleep for optimum learning. But more than that, students need to learn to weigh the potential upside to a late night of studying, against larger risks, like their own mental and physical health. This can be a hard argument to win, in our group of dedicated and enthusiastic scholars in the Upper School. However, it is our job as the adults in their lives, to help them learn how to balance their dreams and goals, with their need for rest and rejuvenation. Will there be a time when a late night is required to meet an important deadline? Of course. But there will also be times when it is better to turn out the light and get those extra two hours of sleep.
