Dear Upper School Families,
Many families ask me for advice on how to provide support for learning at home. Our families are already well committed to education and highlight its importance at home. But there are some things that you can encourage your student to learn, and skills they can develop, that will continue to support their learning, no matter how high in academia they go.
One way is to help them develop their skills in note-taking. All of our students are trained, at one time or another, to take handwritten notes. However, it’s important for them to continue practicing and developing these skills on their own, to find a method that is the most useful for them. Each person, over their life, chooses an organizational method that supports their weaknesses and plays to their strength. Only practice over time hones these skills to their peak effectiveness.
There is quite a bit of research out there that suggests that handwritten notes, far surpass typed notes, in terms of providing deeper learning and processing of information. This distinction is dependent on the way a student chooses to put ideas to paper, but overall, the pen (or pencil) is mightier than the laptop.
The article linked below gives a few tips on how best to support note-taking development skills. These are some of the methods we use in the classroom, and with your support at home, our students will continue to reach the highest levels of success. Find the article here.
