Dear Upper School Families,
I consider the new year one of my favorite times of the year, especially as an educator. The holidays mean a homecoming for many of our alumni. It is the best chance for me to see our former students and hear about what is happening at college and beyond. The most common feedback I hear from students is how well prepared they feel for college. Specifically, how ready they are for college-level work, and how, even though the challenges of college are real, they feel far less stress and anxiety about what their professors ask them to do, compared with their classmates.
My own son attended and graduated from Palm Valley School, so I know that there are times when our students feel a great deal of stress around their courses, the homework load, and especially, exams. However, we always encourage our students to rise to these occasions because we know what they’re capable of. We know they will become more confident, grow in their self-esteem, and then know wholeheartedly that they can tackle difficult tasks. Facing these anxieties and fears in a nurturing environment, where everyone is supporting their success, is the best preparation for what life will throw at them.
At the end of January, our students will take their cumulative semester exams. All teachers will be providing study guides, as well as in-class review and activities to ensure that every student has the opportunity to be successful. If your student is anxious, encourage them to reach out to their teacher or advisor. We are here to guide them through!
