Weekly Notes from Head of Upper School, 3/18

Dear Upper School Families,

Palm Valley School has entered into an innovative instructional territory by teaching and learning online over the past few days due to the outbreak of COVID-19.  The faculty at all grade levels have spent dedicated hours preparing lessons so our Palm Valley Firebirds are able to continue their educational successes in the upcoming days.  Though this is a time filled with some feelings of anxiety, the consistency of a Palm Valley education creates a sense of certainty and reliability for students and families. As our Distance Learning program continues for students, please communicate any concerns, needs, or challenges with teachers and with me.  Communication is essential during this endeavor.

Palm Valley School is taking the Covid-19 situation seriously. Mrs. Rice’s email this week outlined some of the steps we are taking. Attached is a link to a communication from the Riverside County Department of Public Health with more guidelines, resources, and information: click.  We ask that you support these efforts at home by continuing to encourage everyone to wash their hands frequently and maintain “social distancing” practices whenever possible.

Official SAT Exam
The Official SAT for Junior students is rescheduled.  The new test date is April 28th. Juniors will report to Advisory first and then to the test room.  Research shows that one factor in higher performance on these standardized tests is when students are taking the tests in a familiar environment.

Contracts for 2020-2021 School Year
Contracts for next year are out.  If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out.  Scheduling for next year’s classes will begin soon, and it is important that contracts are received for scheduling.  Let Dr. McLachlan know if you have any questions.

Upper School Play
We have selected some tentative dates for rescheduling the Upper School performances. Our students and their directors have worked incredibly hard on what will be the unforgettable swan song of our longtime Drama teacher, Mr. Ken Sarkis. The world premiere of Firebird will be moved to Friday, May 15, Sunday, May 17 is Matinee, Thursday, May 21, Friday, May 22, Saturday, May 23 and Sunday, May 24 is Matinee. We will be refunding all tickets at this time to allow all patrons to re-buy whatever of those nights may work for them and their families. Please look in your email for a refund from Eventbrite and links for the new dates. All rehearsals are also suspended until further notice.
