Dear Middle and Upper School families,
End of Quarter 1
This week marks the end of the first quarter. Please be aware that teachers will provide extra help this week during our flexible advisory period (Firebird Time). Progress reports (which include grades and teacher comments) will be sent home on Friday, October 22, and Student-Led Conferences will take place on Monday, November 1.
Professional Development Day
Monday, October 11, is a Professional Development Day. The school will be closed, but the YMCA will be offering a day camp. Pre-registration is required, along with a minimum of 10 campers. You can pre-register at: www.ymcaofthedesert.org. Go to MEMBER LOG IN and log in to your account. If you do not have an account already they will need to go to REGISTER and create an account first. If you need more information, please contact the YMCA at (760) 341-9622.
State of the School
On October 19, Dr. Sherman will be hosting a zoom call at 9 am to discuss the State of the School, including a thorough review of all of our COVID safety policies and procedures. Please see Dr. Sherman’s October 10 eblast for login and sign-up details.
We will be having our Annual Halloween Parade of Costumes (with some modifications for safety protocols.) Students will be gathering in the gym at 9:00 am on Friday, October 29. At this time, Dr. Sherman will announce the winners of the classroom door decorating contest. Parents are invited to view the parade by lining up outside on the pathway leading from the gym to the Lower School. The parade will begin at approximately 9:15 am. We ask that parents wear masks.
We encourage students to dress up and have fun but remember - no "blood,” "weapons,” or revealing costumes. If the costume includes a mask, it cannot be worn in the class, and it does not replace the masks we require all students and adults to wear inside for safety. Students must wear athletic shoes- this is for safety, no exceptions.
On Veterans’ Day, students will gather for a special assembly on November 11. As part of the event, we will be honoring those who served by having all students walk a lap around the football field: “We walk because they marched.” Donations can be made to the Wounded Warrior Project.
The fall sports season is now in full swing. The high school and middle school cross country teams have a league meet on October 5 and continue to medal in every run.
The middle school volleyball team opened its season with a great match on Wednesday (September 29) and play tomorrow (October 4) at 4 pm in our gym. The Varsity Volleyball team continues its season on the road this week. The girls are still playing great and attempting to get into the CIF Play-Offs.
The middle school Flag Football team kicks off the season tomorrow at 3:30 pm on our football field. Any high school student interested in playing Basketball or Soccer, please see Coach Erenberg. We will be starting Winter practices in the next few weeks.
PVS Spirit Store is open every Thursday morning from 7:30-9:00 am. This year, the Spirit Store is selling an exceptional Firebird Blend Coffee created for our families by a PVS family. It is delicious! If Thursday mornings do not work for you, please email firstname.lastname@example.org, and they will try to accommodate you.
Amazon Smile is another program that can help support PVS. The process is simple: visit smile.amazon.com and indicate PVS as your donation site of choice, then place your Amazon order. A percentage (0.5%) of that purchase and all subsequent purchases through Amazon Smile will benefit our school.
The parent directory is now "live." This is a way for families to see contact information for those who permitted us to publish. Parents go to the pvs.org website and click on the mybackpack tab at the top of the page.
Students in grades 9-12 who have a signed BYOD contract, please return your school-issued Chromebooks to Mr. Kisling ASAP.
