A Message from the Head of Middle and Upper School

October 17, 2021

Dear Middle and Upper School families,

Progress Reports and Student-Led Conferences
Progress reports (which include grades and teacher comments) will be sent home on Friday, October 22, and Student-Led Conferences (SLC) will take place on Monday, November 1. An email will be sent out on Wednesday, October 20 with a link for you to book your conference.

State of the School
On October 19, Dr. Sherman will be hosting a zoom call at 9 am to discuss the State of the School, including a thorough review of all of our COVID safety policies and procedures. To join, please email mgreer@pvs.org to receive the Zoom link.

Firebird Athletics
On Tuesday, October 5, our cross country team traveled to Riverside and had an outstanding showing. In the Middle School girls' 2-mile race, Chloe Elbaz put in a late-race kick to come from behind and win by two seconds at the finish line! Emily Feffer finished 15th overall (9th for 8th grade) and Sierra James placed 32nd overall (6th for 6th grade) in that same race. In the Middle School Boys race, Deshawn Tunmore finished 66th out of 143 runners, the largest field of runners on the day. Matteo Lam finished 112th on a breezy, 85-degree race course. Rounding out the day was senior Sophie Zhong, who returned from injury to run a well-paced, 3-mile race, finishing 16th out of 40 JV runners. The final league meet is this Tuesday, October 19, followed by the League Championships on November 2; both will be held at the California Citrus State Historic Park in Riverside.

Last week our flag football team defeated Kings 20-0 and followed up with a 28-6 win over OLPH.
Tomorrow, October 18, the football team plays at home against St. Theresa, and the game starts at 3:30.

The middle school girls volleyball team had a great match against Raymond Cree on October 6, losing a third game tiebreak 16-14. The next game is tomorrow at home against OLPH, and the game starts at 4:00 pm.

The high school girls volleyball finished the season on Thursday, October 7. The team had a great season with 3-0 victories over Desert Chapel and Public Safety Academy. Freshman Chrissy Pinkney finished in the top 10 in CIF for aces on the season. Congrats, Lady Firebirds!

Basketball practices for high school boys and girls will begin on Thursday, October 21, from 3:30-5:00 pm. Please get in touch with Coach Erenberg if you have any questions. kerenberg@pvs.org

Halloween Parade
We will be having our Annual Halloween Parade of Costumes (with some modifications for safety protocols). Students will be gathering in the gym at 9:00 am on Friday, October 29. At this time, Dr. Sherman will announce the winners of the classroom door decorating contest. Parents are invited to view the parade by lining up outside on the pathway leading from the gym to the Lower School. The parade will begin at approximately 9:15 am. We ask that parents wear masks.

We encourage students to dress up and have fun but remember - no "blood," "weapons," or revealing costumes. If the costume includes a mask, it cannot be worn in the class, and it does not replace the masks we require all students and adults to wear inside for safety. Students must wear athletic shoes- this is for safety, no exceptions.

Veterans' Day
On  November 11, students will gather for a special assembly to commemorate Veterans' Day. As part of the event, we will be honoring those who served by having all students walk a lap around the football field: "We walk because they marched." Donations can be made to the Wounded Warrior Project.

Earthquake Preparedness
PVS will participate in the Great California Shakeout on October 21. For more information about earthquake preparedness, visit this website.

Uniform Policy
As the weather gets cooler, please remember the uniform guidelines for sweatshirts and other outerwear- all must have the PVS logo and be purchased from Norman's Uniform, Land's End, or our Spirit Store. For your convenience, the Spirit Store is open Thursdays from 7:30 am - 9:00 am.
