Weekly Notes from the Head of Lower School, 1/15

“If there is no struggle, there is no progress.” ~ Frederick Douglass

Dear Families,

I have written often about developing a growth mindset in our students and ourselves. More and more research is finding that there is hard evidence that the struggle to solve a problem has a positive impact on brain growth and connectivity. As Jo Bolar writes in this article, click, “When students look at me with a puppy dog face and say: “This is hard,” I say, “That is fantastic. That feeling of ‘hard’ is the feeling of your brain developing, strengthening, and growing”. There are some wonderful children’s books that encourage kids to embrace the struggle: Your Fantastic, Elastic Brain: Stretch It, Shape It by JoAnn Deak, Ph.D., I Can’t Do That... Yet by Esther Pia Cordova, and Bubble Gum Brain, by Julia Cook. I guess the adage, “If at first, you don’t succeed, try, try again,” still rings true.
