Announcement from Head of School, 3/13

Dear Families,

After much evaluation and challenge with the COVID-19 situation, we are making a decision to move to a Distance Learning Plan for all students effective Monday, March 16th. I am officially announcing Palm Valley School’s move to Distance Learning. As a school that already practices a significant amount of technology integration in our classrooms, our Faculty and Staff are in an excellent position for this move. There is no replacement for live teaching and learning collaboratively with students, but in light of COVID-19 and best practices in “social distancing” - this is our best alternative.

Please note there have been no instances of exposure or diagnosis on our campus or in our community. For now, our move to distance learning is effective Monday, March 16 until further notice. All on-campus activities for students are suspended. As this situation unfolds, we will update you. Faculty and Staff are preparing to reach out to students and families first thing on Monday with more specific academic information on how the move to online education and Distance Learning will look for their individual age group.

As such, we are postponing the Upper School Play, Firebird. We have selected some tentative dates for rescheduling these performances. Our students and their directors have worked incredibly hard on what will be the unforgettable swan song of our longtime Drama teacher, Mr. Ken Sarkis. The world premiere of Firebird will be moved to Friday, May 15Sunday, May 17 is MatineeThursday, May 21Friday, May 22Saturday, May 23 and Sunday, May 24 is Matinee. We will be refunding all tickets at this time to allow all patrons to re-buy whatever of those nights may work for them and their families. Please look in your email for a refund from Eventbrite and links for the new dates. All rehearsals are also suspended until further notice.

We also have a message to pass along to all our families involved in Upper School athletics. The CIF - Victory League administrators have suspended all games until at least March 30. Additionally, all practices for Athletics are suspended until further notice.

Please know that these decisions were not made lightly, but we feel strongly that we need to ensure the safety of our students and employees and significantly reduce potential for exposure to the COVID-19 virus for you, our families. Thank you for your understanding, support, and flexibility in the face of this unpredictable situation. PVS is a strong community and we appreciate your continued partnership and support.

Best,

Susan Rice
