Students at all levels of the school are encouraged to live the Palm Valley value of "Responsibility to Self and Others" by participating in a variety of service learning activities. From recycling drives in the Preschool to holiday toy collection in the Lower School and our Middle School and Upper School partnering with organizations like the Lion's Club and United Way.
We encourage this level of involvement in service not only for its intrinsic value, but also because community service increases students' self-esteem, reinforces academic skills, provides career and occupational direction, teaches about real-world problems and solutions, develops leadership skills, encourages a feeling of empathy for others, and builds are broader community. Our students gain as much, if not more, as they give from these experiences.
Even our youngest students in the Preschool run a recycling program each year and take their collection to trade in for cash. They donate that cash to Martha's Village and Kitchen. Our Lower School students participate in a variety of activities from Book and Clothing drives to Caroling visits to shut in elders and building the perfect cat toys to donate to shelter for kittens and cats. Our students develop not only a sense of self from this work, but compassion and kindness for others.
Our Middle School service learning projects have helped support the following organizations:
- Find Food Bank
- Living Free Animal Sanctuary
- Cyber Seniors program
- Kids for Wish Kids
We organize group projects to introduce them to the great variety of service organizations and opportunities in the area, and also encourage students to identify needs in the community and design their own programs to address those needs. Our Upper School service learning projects have helped support the following organizations:
- Well in the Desert
- Martha's Village and Kitchen
- Boys' and Girls' Club of the Desert
- Blood Drive for the American Red Cross
- On campus recycling programs
- Guide Dogs of the Desert
- Desert Best Friend's Closet
