Weekly Notes from the Head of Preschool, 8/29

Dear Preschool Families,

It has been an amazing start to the school year! All of the children seem to be adjusting nicely to the new routine of the school day. It is such a joy to see old friends reconnecting and new friendships developing. As we all settle into the routine of the school year, I want to stress how important it is build a consistent schedule for your child. Children do best when they can predict what is next. Building this familiarity is crucial to your child’s success in school. Most of the classrooms have a morning meeting at 8:30 am. It is always best to have your child arrive before this meeting so that they have some time to acclimate to the school environment and mentally prepare for that transition. The school day ends at 3:00 pm with After-Care offered until 5:30 pm. It is a nice idea to have a consistent pick up time for your child as well. If you are unsure as to what the best time to pick up and drop off are, please speak with your classroom teacher.

Speaking of pick up, have you ever asked your child how their day was on the way home? I’ll bet most of you receive a blank stare or a one-word answer to this question. This communication barrier is one of the most common hurdles parents and guardians face today when trying to understand their child’s day at school. This question is often too open-ended for children. Their day is filled with many ups and downs, and the time it would take to review all of this with their parents is just too exhausting. I would suggest rephrasing the question as, “What was the best thing that happened today and what was the hardest or most challenging?” This is finite and has a clear answer that is usually in the front of every child’s mind. This will help your child practice their expressive language in a meaningful and accessible way and create a nice routine to engage in each day on the way home.
