Weekly Notes from the Head of Preschool, 11/7

Dear Families,

Yesterday was the Snack Election! Each child in E-10 was given the chance to cast their ballot for either fruit snacks or popsicles. After the election, we gathered together to sort and count the ballots. I am happy to report that popsicles won by a landslide! All the children enjoyed their special treat in the afternoon on the playground. This is the beginning of a civics education for the children. Yesterday, we talked a lot about how lucky we are to live in a country where we have the opportunity to vote and choose our leaders. As they move up in the grades at PVS there will be many more opportunities to learn more about democracy and our government. Hopefully, though, they will always remember their first election in Preschool!

Today we are celebrating Diwali. I want to give a special thank you to Ms. Bhakta and Ms. Patel for visiting and teaching us about this very special holiday. We all read a book about Diwali and then completed a piece of art that represents a Diya, which is a special lamp that is frequently used during the holiday. These lamps are often placed at the entrances of houses and the name Diwali is derived from the word Diya. This afternoon our big buddies will help us complete Rangoli chalk drawings on our playground. These special artworks typically use colored rice, sand, or flour. Thank you to everyone for teaching us about this special holiday.

The Drowsy Chaperone
Please join the Palm Valley Upper School Drama students for a performance of the musical comedy, "The Drowsy Chaperone." This is a crazy-fun parody of American musical comedies of the 1920s. A middle-aged, asocial musical theatre zealot sits in a chair in his small apartment playing the record of his favorite musical, the 1928 hit… THE DROWSY CHAPERONE. The show comes to life onstage with all its characters singing and dancing to the music of the 20’s. As the story unfolds, the man in the chair wryly comments to the audience on the music, the story, the actors and even his own complicated life. We are excited to share fun and laughter in 5 performances!  Please be aware that the play is rated PG and may not be appropriate for young children. Purchase tickets here.
