Weekly Notes from the Head of Preschool, 10/17

Dear Families,

Today is Safety Day! Riverside Fire and Police are on hand to teach our students and answer questions about their service to the greater Coachella Valley area. Thank you to all of our parent volunteers that are helping out today.

Tomorrow is the Great California Shakeout Drill. Our entire school will be participating in this drill at 10:18 am. The classroom teachers have been discussing this all week with the children. At 10:18 am we will practice the “Duck, Cover, and Hold” position with the children for 60 seconds. After a minute we will evacuate the building just like we do during a fire drill. We will do our best to make sure every child feels safe and secure during this important drill.

We will be continuing to use Shutterfly this year for PA/parent communication and picture posting. A permission form was sent home last Friday. It is important that everyone fills this out ASAP and returns it to your classroom teacher. This will allow us to take and share photographs of your child on Shutterfly. Thank you in advance for your help with this!

Crickets
You may have noticed that Mrs. Manning has not been in the classroom for some time. Unfortunately, after dealing with a long illness with her child, Mrs. Manning has decided that she needs to be at home with her baby. We are so sorry to be saying goodbye to her, but we wish her the best of luck and hope that she can rejoin us in the future. The good news is that Ms. Bride, who has been filling in these last couple weeks, will continue to work in the Crickets room until Ms. Prado returns in January. Ms. Bride has many years of experience working with toddlers and she has developed a close relationship with the children in the Cricket class. We are so lucky to have her in Ms. Prado’s absence.

Quails
Since Ms. Bride has left the Quails for the Crickets we have asked one of our long-time substitute teachers, Mrs. Mikity, to step into the team teacher role in that classroom. Mrs. Mikity will be with Mrs. Thompson in the Quails class for the rest of the year. We are very excited to have Mrs. Mikity join our Preschool team.

Halloween
This year Halloween is on Wednesday, October 31st. Pre-Kindergarten students (E-10 building) will attend a special Buddy Program assembly in the morning. Parents are encouraged to attend this assembly. At the end of the assembly, the students and their big buddies will parade their costumes for parents on the paved sidewalk outside of the gym towards the athletic field and then back into the Middle School where they will be able to trick-or-treat at all of the decorated doors! Room Parents are also working with the classroom teachers on plans for a healthy Halloween treat in the afternoon. They will be sending parent information via Shutterfly. Please note, we do encourage students to dress up on this day, but there are important costume guidelines that should be followed: no blood, no masks, no hand-held items (including weapons, wands, etc), and no full face makeup/paint. Students must wear their normal shoes for the entire day. The E-9 building will not participate in assembly or the parade and instead will have their own special classroom celebrations. We want all of our students to enjoy this special day at school, and we thank you in advance for adhering to the policies and procedures of this day so that we can make this a safe and fun Halloween.
