Weekly Notes from Head of Preschool, 9/11

Dear Preschool Families,

Can you believe that this is our first full week of school? Our students are getting more and more comfortable with their classrooms and the routines within our school. As the weeks go by, you should notice your child becomes more comfortable and confident at drop off time. During drop off, we ask that you be sure to sign your child in using the correct timestamp as well as a full legal signature. We do encourage our families to leave as soon as they have signed in and said goodbye to their child. If families stay for a while during drop off it can send mixed messages to a child. If you feel that you need more assistance at drop off time with your child, please do not hesitate to ask a teacher or me for help.

Our Preschool is now using the portfolio function of Class Dojo. You should have received an email with an invitation for viewing your student's portfolio last week as well as a flier with your student code to access the individual portfolio. This is a new application our Preschool is using and it is our goal to upload photos each week, replacing our Friday email of pictures. If you have any questions about getting set up or getting connected to your child’s portfolio, contact me directly. This is a great new tool that we are using and please provide feedback if you have any.

As we continue on our theme of friendship and kindness this month, leaves will appear on our Kindness Tree in the Prekindergarten building. We are on a great start to the year and will continue to keep empathy and social-emotional awareness as key components to our curriculum throughout the school year.

As a reminder, we will also be ensuring that our shoe policy is being followed. If your child is walking, they must come to school in sneakers with socks. This is a policy purely based on the safety of your child. Boots, crocs, jelly shoes, slip-on flats, etc are no longer permitted in our Preschool. If you have any questions when it comes to proper school attire, please reach out to me or any of our teachers.

Quail, Coyote, and Jackrabbit parents -- starting Monday, September 16th, we will be having our Outdoor Days. If weather permits, we will be spending the better part of the morning on our playground area and bringing our classes outside for our students to learn as they explore and investigate. We do ask that each child brings an extra pair of closed-toed water shoes or old sneakers that can get dirty. The most important part of participating in an Outdoor Classroom is to allow children to explore nature and be actively engaged in having these experiences. There will be more “What do you need?” questions from teachers rather than telling children what to do or not to do. Our Outdoor Classroom is a huge part of our curriculum that we will be expanding on as the years continue.

If you did not already get a chance to order your child's Fall Portraits, you still have the opportunity to do so! Go to  www.cordovaphotography.com, click Order Online, and then select Palm Valley School.
