Weekly Notes from the Head of Middle School, 4/11

Dear Middle School Families,

Welcome back! I hope you all enjoyed the Spring Break. This time of year, our advisory program will begin to shift its attention to the Health and Wellness Unit. I am pleased to announce that we will have visitors from Eisenhower Medical Center presenting to us again about puberty and the adolescent changing body. We will also have a speaker present the “Triangle of Wellness,” which encompasses the physical, emotional, and social aspects of a healthy lifestyle. As we enter the month of May, we will recognize the importance of mental health. A behavioral health team from Eisenhower will present on a variety of strategies for overcoming depression and anxiety and explore ways that we can support our peers who struggle with similar issues. To further support May’s Mental Health Awareness Month, we invite all of our PVS families to join us May 17th at 6 PM for a screening of the movie ANGST, a documentary that discusses the symptoms and struggles of living with anxietyFor more information and to RSVP, click here. Lastly, we turn to gender identity and diversity issues as our students learn about the importance of acceptance and understanding differences within our society. We are very lucky to have such a close working relationship with professionals within the community that can provide the most current information about topics and have an immediate impact on our students' development.

End of Quarter
I want to remind everyone that we now do end of semester Honor Roll and that the end of this quarter is to communicate student progress only. Honor Roll is determined by the GPA calculated from the 3rd and 4th quarter grades, not an average of 3rd and 4th quarter GPA. I encourage you to reach out to teachers and advisors if you have any questions about your child’s progress. We will award students who have achieved honor roll or high honor roll during the End of Year Assembly at 8:30 AM on June 8th. Furthermore, students who have earned the honor roll and high honor roll will be recognized in the Phoenix. If you have any questions about student progress, I encourage you to reach out to our subject teachers for support.

Free Dress Day
This Friday is Free Dress Day! As a reminder, all clothing must be clean, in good repair (no holes or patches), and meet a standard of decorum appropriate for a school that otherwise wears uniforms. The following are never permitted: cutoffs, tank tops, spaghetti straps, bare midriffs, cleavage, too short skirts or shorts (no shorter than 4” above the knee), clothing that is excessively tight fitting or over large in waist or length, any ornament or t-shirt printed with offensive graphics or slogans, clothing with holes or tears, or that is dirty etc. Please support us and ensure students are coming to school in compliance with the dress code.
