Weekly Notes from the Head of Middle School, 2/14

Dear Middle School Families,

Our long-awaited Move Up Day is this Friday, February 16Our 7th graders will be introduced to the 8th grade curriculum and our 8th graders will be spending the day in the Upper School. Our now seasoned 6th graders will be buddying up with our incoming 6th graders from the Lower School. Move Up Day gives the 5th graders the opportunity to experience an average day in the Middle School.

Our teachers have prepared lessons and activities that will introduce them to their subjects and build confidence in what can be a daunting developmental milestone. Following Move Up Day, Mrs. Mulé and I will be hosting a Q & A session for 5th grade families who have questions about the Middle School. If you are a 5th grade parent, you are invited to attend. All 5th grade students will be picked up in the East Courtyard of the Middle School at 3:20 PM. I want to thank our 6th graders for representing the Middle School and doing their part to model the kind of citizenship we expect all of our students demonstrate.

During this Friday morning's assembly, we will be recognizing Middle School students who have earned honor roll or high honor roll for the first semester. The students will come up to the front, receive their certificate, and get their picture taken with their peers to mark this special accomplishment. Families are welcome to join us from 8:20 AM to 8:45 AM in the Gym.

Gala Online Auction
If you weren't able to attend the Gala you can still help support our school and score some incredible deals and great items through our Online Auction found HERE! From great vacation packages to jewelry, student art and one-of-a-kind experiences for your student with some faculty fun packages, there is something for everyone! Please take a look and bid on what you are interested in! Join us in raising funds for our incredible school - we are grateful for your support in this way. Every bid and dollar makes a difference in the life of our school, students, and programs.

Pick Up and Drop Off
When picking up or dropping off your child, do not stop, park, or wait in areas with a red curb, but especially not near the stop sign or in front of the fire hydrant. We need to keep this area clear at all times. Please only pick up or drop off at the unmarked curb areas near the circle. Yes, your student may need to walk a bit if the gates aren't open yet, but we cannot have parents stopped or parked in red curb areas as it presents a safety issue. If you park in the parking lot during pick up times, students can use the crosswalk and come to you.

MS Pi Club and 8th Grade Trip to Knotts Berry Farm
On Tuesday, March 13, members of MS Pi Club, and the 8th Grade Physical Science class will head to Knott's Berry Farm to experience practical applications of the principles of mass, force, and energy as they are applied to rides. Our students have been learning about Newton's Laws of Motion in class and during club meetings and during this trip, they will have the chance to live and feel it. This guided tour is part of Knott's Berry Farm's acclaimed Passports in Education and is led by experienced scientists. Participants will never look at amusement roller coasters in the same way! We will be dividing into two groups depending on student's "Thrill" levels, so fear not gravity lovers, there will be milder, but still fun, options. Permission slips have been distributed and are due back to Mrs. Farley, with $70 to cover admission and chartered bus, no later than this Friday, February 16.

Grandparents and Special Friends Day
We are doing something special for Grandparents and Special Friends day this year. We are going to have our students decorate and personalize the invitations that will be sent out this year. A letter has gone home with students asking for you to provide us with the addresses of those you want us to invite. The students will decorate the invitations and we will mail them off on their behalf. Please return the letters with complete addresses by Thursday, February 15 so we can begin decorating!

Desert Best Friend’s Closet Clothing Drive
Palm Valley School will be holding a clothing drive from February 12 - March 2 to benefit Desert Best Friend’s Closet. This is a great opportunity to make a difference in our community and we encourage you to join the effort to support those in need. The focus of this organization is to help individuals land jobs and assist with employment opportunities. Whether you are able to donate one item or ten, each article of clothing will empower others to look their best. They are looking for suits, business casuals, shoes, handbags, belts, ties, scarves, and accessories. All items must be in clean and good condition. Please present clothes on hangers ready to wear! Bring these items to the front desk of the Middle School. Thank you for your support.
