Weekly Notes from the Head of Middle School, 10/3

Dear Middle School Families,

One of the more challenging aspects of being Head of the Middle School is disciplining students. As a parent, I know firsthand how important it is to teach teens that their poor choices do not have to define who they are, yet they can be held accountable for those poor choices. In a society where our students have access to devices that can easily be used for harm as well as good, it gets very complicated for them and often they do not realize that they can still be held accountable for behavior they think they can hide.

An example of this is Snapchat. Lately, I have been dealing with many issues in the Middle School because of this app. Students seem to be under the impression that Snapchat posts disappear forever. In fact, they do not. The images they “snap” are still stored on their devices and are actually retrievable.

While most of these issues have been occurring outside of school, where it is not my responsibility to discipline students, often, the problem is brought to school and ends up requiring my involvement. As a school that has no tolerance for any kind of bullying or harassment, when these matters come to my attention, I will be the one holding that student accountable. I encourage you to talk to your students about their use of Snapchat and other apps like it, to see how much they understand and what they know about them. I’m including this link for your information. Click here to learn how to retrieve Snapchat images from a device.

Finally, if you have any questions or concerns, I am always available to discuss this or any topics relating to this. Feel free to reach out.
