Weekly Notes from the Head of Middle School, 10/23

Dear Middle School Families,

It is hard to watch our children grapple with new material or a new class. It can be especially hard when it seems like it is a class that they should be good at, or a subject where they’ve had success in the past. There are several developmental stages during the teen years that all students must navigate to ultimately become adult critical thinkers. It is important that we support student learning and give children the tools they need to overcome obstacles, and feel like competent and independent learners.

One of the best things we can do when our children are struggling is avoid the impulse to remove the obstacle. Struggle is an important process and if we want our students to be resilient, they need to learn how to handle struggle and stress. Supporting them, without judgment or action is one of the hardest things that parents have to do. Sometimes offering to just sit with your student while they work through something hard, or offering a “this seems tough, but you can do it” is enough to take the burden off their shoulders and allow them to see their way through a difficult assignment.

Most importantly, rely on your partnerships with your student’s advisor, teacher or division head.  If you need support in helping your student deal with a difficult situation, assignment or class, we are all here to help. The partnership between school, student and family is the best way we have to help students achieve success.

Golf Cart Parade
Participate in the 55th Annual Palm Desert Golf Cart Parade with PVS! The parade and festival takes place on Sunday, Oct. 27th and PVS will be participating.. Thanks to Boy Scout Troop #707 and Mr. Kroe, we will be creating a themed golf cart and large photo frames for crowd engagement and Palm Valley brand awareness. We encourage all students to participate in the parade by walking with our group or supporting from the sidelines. The more walkers we have, the more impact we make! The theme this year is Let the Good Times Roll, so any 50’s and 60’s style costumes are encouraged (men can wear a plain white t-shirt, rolled up jeans and ray bans and women can wear poodle skirts etc.). We will meet at the Bank of America at 10:30am if you plan on walking in the parade. Email Abby Sturgeon at asturgeon@pvs.org for more information!

Fall Festival
Our Annual Fall Festival is coming up on Saturday, November 2nd. The Parent Association has been hard at work to ensure it's the best one yet!  Join us for games, rides, face painting, a petting zoo, food, crafts and more from 3 pm - 6 pm in the lower school field. We’ve also added new activities this year including a gaming truck, a laser tag course and an interactive photo mirror (just to name a few).  There really is something for ALL ages! Admission is free and you can purchase tickets for the games and activities at the event that day. This event is open to the public.

MS Play
This fall, the Palm Valley Middle School Drama class of thirteen 7th and 8th-grade actors has taken on a challenging piece of theater to stage for the community. In the award-winning play by Reginald Rose called 12 ANGRY JURORS, a dozen very different personalities are sequestered to deliberate the fate of a young man accused of murder. In a two-act, 90-minute drama, beliefs clash and emotions rise as four men and eight women argue the guilt or innocence of the accused. Performances are: Friday, November 8, Saturday, November 9 and Friday, November 15 at 7:30 pm. There is a matinee performance on Sunday, November 10, in the afternoon at 2:30 pm. Tickets available online here.

Spirit Store
The Palm Valley Spirit Store is open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2:00-3:30 pm.  It is a great place to find all the Palm Valley gear you need to show your Firebird pride, as well as purchase gently used uniforms.

All parents/guardians should have a MyBackpack WebID and be able to login and see MyDocuments. Forms to complete will be shown as "New.” Once they are completed they will be submitted to Administrative Assistants for approval. Any questions or concerns may be directed to Mr. Kisling at gkisling@pvs.org or Sarai at sjimenez@pvs.org
