Monday Notes from the Head of School, 4/9

"Be strong, be fearless, be beautiful. And believe that anything is possible when you have the right people there to support you." -Misty Copeland

Dear Palm Valley Families,

Welcome back from Spring Break! It is always such a pleasure to see the students return to campus after a week off. The stories that they have to share of adventures and their excitement to be with their friends and reconnect with favorite teachers is palpable. The campus is renewed with their presence and it's always such a pleasant reunion! I hope that they, and you, are settling comfortably back into the routines and rituals that will take us into our last quarter of the year with strength and perseverance to end the year on a high note!

We have so much happening through the end of the year and I hope that you can join us for some of the great community activities that we still have left to celebrate. Our Annual Golf event has changed formats this year and we are hoping to include more families for a fun day in the sun! Our "PVS Day of Golf" will be held on Saturday, April 21st - just two weeks from now - at the Tahquitz Creek Golf Resort. The biggest change to the event this year is that in addition to the fun day of golf on the course for those who are accomplished adult and teen golfers, we are now offering a new activity called FootGolf. FootGolf is a family-friendly activity and requires no real "skill" and it's fun for all ages! We are hoping to draw those of you in that aren't golf pros but want to enjoy time outdoors with your whole family on the course! You can learn more about FootGolf by watching this video. Our 8 am Golf Shotgun takes place on the Resort Course for $100 and our 10 am FootGolf Shotgun kicks off on the Legend Course for just $65! You can buy tickets at www.pvs.org/golfday18. All tickets include a breakfast and lunch buffet, a 15% shop discount, and green, cart, and range fees. A rental ball will be provided to all FootGolfers. Please join us for this family-friendly event to support our great school. All proceeds benefit Palm Valley School! Come join us!

I want to personally thank each and every one of you who have sent your well wishes and thoughts to my husband and I as we are looking forward to welcoming a baby girl later this month. As such, it is time that I let you all know that I will be beginning my maternity leave this week. Thursday, April 12th will be my last official day of the year. I will, however, be returning for all of the end of the year events like Graduation and Promotion, the Awards Assembly and EOY teacher meetings, so I will hope to see you then! I'll then take the remainder of my leave over the summer and return full time in the Fall. While I am away, Jodi Wiseley, our CFO/Business Manager will be the Administrator in charge. You can see Jodi for any issues that would normally rise to the level of Head of School during my absence. While your Division Heads should always be your first point of contact for any issues, questions, or concerns that may arise, Andee Steinman, Head of Upper School, will be overseeing any high-level issues that pertain to the areas of Academics, Curriculum, or Student Discipline. I know that our Leadership Team is very strong at Palm Valley School and that this will be a seamless transition during my absence. Please feel free to reach out at any time to any of our Administrators if you feel the need to!

Lastly, I want to give a huge shout out and kudos to our Select Choir who traveled last week to New York City, and will be returning this week. They have worked very hard to prepare for a performance in the renowned Carnegie Hall where they will join together with other choruses from around the country to perform some very sophisticated literature with a professional conductor and musicians to accompany them. I am very proud of their hard work to make this trip happen and grateful for the parents and families who support them, as well as their incredibly talented and hard-working conductor and teacher, Mr. Craig Gahnz! I can't wait for their return on Wednesday to hear all about their adventure and experience. Go Firebirds!

Thank you for all you do to support your own students, our faculty and administration, and all our talented Firebirds at Palm Valley. We could not do all that we do without you and we are grateful!

Best,

Susan Rice
