Though you couldn’t tell from the weather, Friday, September 22, is the first day of fall. Students and teachers are into their routines, and classrooms are abuzz with activity. My favorite part of the day is greeting each student in the morning when they tell me about all of the exciting things they are experiencing in class. I am sure they are sharing their news with you, too.
Did you know that Palm Valley School is planting a Peace Pole? Our Peace Pole will be among the over 100,000 around the world. The pole will have the phrase, “May Peace Prevail on Earth” written in the languages of eight of the many cultures of our Palm Valley community: English, Spanish, Mandarin, Hindi, Farsi, Japanese, French, and Cahuilla. We will be dedicating the Peace Pole on Friday, October 13th at 10:00 am. You are cordially invited to attend.
As part of our Global Studies and cultural enrichment program, we will have an assembly on Thursday, October 19th at 2:00 pm in the Lower School Amphitheater where students will learn about Diwali. Diwali is celebrated in many countries, including India, and an important part of the Hindu and Sikh cultures. After the presentation, students will be making Rangoli drawings, which are present in Diwali celebrations around the world.
We will include other important cultural traditions throughout the year. One of our mission-driven values is Diversity, learning about various cultures is just one way we encourage students to appreciate and embrace differences and teach tolerance.
Palm Valley School will be participating in the Great California Shakeout on Thursday, October 19th. To better prepare in the event of an earthquake, students and faculty will practice the duck, cover, and hold position and evacuation procedures.

The beginning of school is a busy time for all. Whether you are getting notices about a missing form, getting reminders about the uniform policy, or learning classroom routines, it may seem a bit daunting. Please know I appreciate each and every family, and I am available to assist you in answering questions. Have a wonderful week.
