Weekly Notes from the Head of Lower School, 9/26

Dear Families,

As you know, Wednesday, October 3rd is the first of two student-led conferences. We begin with a modified version in Kindergarten, and build to entirely student-driven conferences in the later elementary grades. There is much value in these! So what is a student-led conference, and why do we do them? Simply stated, these are conferences between students, parents, and teachers. During this time, the student is in charge of explaining his or her progress, accomplishments, strengths, and areas in which they can improve. They also set goals. Students usually have one or two pieces of work they choose to show.

Teachers model, encourage and develop student self-reflection, in age-appropriate ways, from the beginning of the school year. The ability to self-reflect is one of the characteristics of deeper learning. Students who are deep learners are self-directed goal setters who are comfortable and able to recognize areas for improvement and set goals to do so. By conference time, students are encouraged to demonstrate this to their families. At the second conference in March, you will see a marked improvement in students' abilities to articulate their progress and be comfortable with areas that need improvement.

Of course, if you would like to discuss your students' academics, grades, or other issues, please feel free to make an appointment with the classroom teacher for another time. I am confident you will see the value of the student-led conference. I will see you on October 3rd and, don't forget to bring your child!
