Weekly Notes from the Head of Lower School, 9/19

Dear Families,

Though you might not be able to tell from the weather, Saturday, September 22nd, is the first day of fall. Students and teachers are into their routines, and classrooms are abuzz with activity. My favorite part of the day is greeting each student in the morning and hearing about all of the exciting things they are experiencing in class. I am sure they are sharing their news with you, too.

You may have questions about technology, social media, internet use, and more. As children surf the internet, look at videos, and download content, many families have concerns and feel uninformed about what is and is not appropriate for their children. Technology has become an integral part of our lives. It is a valuable educational tool and can put the world at our fingertips. As with anything, there can be positive and negative consequences from the use of technology. I highly suggest Common Sense Media as a resource. Common Sense is an independent, nonprofit organization dedicated to helping kids thrive in a world of media and technology. This site has ratings, recommendations, and advice that can help you and your students in all areas of technology. Whether you want to know if you should let your child have their own YouTube channel, find appropriate apps for your student, or get advice on books, websites, or videos, this is a wonderful resource. I am happy to answer any questions you may have about how to keep your child safe when online.

I have scheduled my Lower School Morning Coffees and invite you to attend. This is a time when you can meet other families from the grade level and ask questions about the curriculum, our programs, or PVS in general. All coffees begin at 8:05 am and are held in room E8-2.

Kindergarten- Wednesday, September 26th
First Grade- Thursday, September 27th
Second Grade- Monday, October 1st
Fourth Grade- Thursday, October 4th
Fifth Grade- Wednesday, October 10th
Third Grade- Thursday, October 11th

On Wednesday, September 26th Acqua California Bistro at the River in Rancho Mirage and KOOL 95.9 FM are hosting a Wine Down Wednesday event from 5 pm - 7 pm. Tickets are $10 at the door and 100% of the proceeds benefit Palm Valley School!

Student Led Conferences are on Wednesday, October 3rd. Students in Kindergarten through Fifth grade are working with their teachers to prepare. Student Led Conferences are a very valuable way for students of all ages to reflect on their strengths and areas of need, set learning goals, and showcase their work. If you would like to discuss particular issues with the teacher and time permits, your child can be excused to wait in the office, or you can set up another time to speak with the teacher. The conferences are a time for students to reflect on their learning and set goals. There will be no regular classes scheduled on this day.

The following Monday, October 8th is a professional development day for faculty, and there is no school.

For your convenience, there are mini-camps available both October 3rd and October 8th from 7:30 am to 5:30 pm, open to grades PS - 5th. Visit pvs.org/camps for more information or to sign up.

Best,

Mrs. Fisher
