Weekly Notes from the Head of Lower School, 9/18

Dear Families,

Last week, I had the opportunity to attend a workshop presented by Dr. Jo Boaler from Stanford University. Dr. Boaler is world renowned for her work with educators and students in the area of teaching and learning mathematics. She and her colleagues have research-based evidence to prove that our brains can continue to grow throughout our entire life. Our brains are not "fixed," but entirely capable of change, growth, adaptability, and re-wiring. Anyone can learn anything at any age!

Dr. Boaler has applied this to mathematics and learning and found that brain growth occurs in the struggle, not in the accomplishment. What does this mean for students and teachers? It means that we need to celebrate challenges,  struggle with problems, and develop a growth mindset that tells us that anyone can learn anything, even math! Her latest book, Limitless explains her work in detail and has invaluable information for parents and educators. Our Lower School faculty is focused on helping students develop this mindset. I’ll be sharing more information in my subsequent e-blasts.
