Weekly Notes from the Head of Lower School, 5/30

Dear Lower School Families,

Some of the fondest and earliest memories I have are those of my mom or dad reading to me. My dad used to change his voice as the characters changed in the book, Are You My Mother by P.D. Eastman. We all know how important it is to read aloud to children, but a recent study reinforced this value by looking specifically at what goes on in a child's brain during the process. It discusses the benefits of one on one reading versus viewing a video or using an electronic device to read to kids. While this particular study was aimed at three to five years old, numerous others address the value of reading with and to children of all ages. Click here to read more.

It was wonderful to see our families enjoying breakfast together last Friday at Flapjacks for Families! Thank you to the Parent Association and to those who donated food and supplies. This event would not have happened without you! I hope many of you will be joining us for our Volunteer and Donor Appreciation Breakfast this Friday, June 1st from 8 am - 9 am in the gym. RSVP here.

Please join us for our Promotion and Graduation ceremony next week. Students, their families, and the entire faculty come together as a community to celebrate our Upper School Graduates and student advancement from one grade to the next. This year, the ceremony will be on Thursday, June 7th at 6:00 pm, at the JW Marriott Resort on Country Club Drive in Palm Desert. Click here for specific information and times. Dress uniform, for Kindergarten through Fourth grade, please. Fifth graders see the dress code sent by the teachers. To preorder 5th Grade Promotion photos, click here.

Friday, June 8th is the last day of school, and there are some very special activities planned. Students should arrive at school in regular uniform. We have an end of the year awards assembly in the gym starting at 8:20 am. Afterward, students will return to their classrooms. There will be lunch served at 11:30 am and students can change into their swimsuits for Water Day! Thank you to our Parent Association for helping to put together this event. This is a full day of school. Students will be dismissed at 3:00 pm. After-Care is available if needed.

What are your plans for summer? There are some wonderful activities planned at Palm Valley School this summer. From Full S.T.E.A.M. Ahead Camp to Basketball Camp, visit www.pvs.org/camps for more information or to sign up.

We will be sending final report cards and information about next year's classes, along with summer reading lists mid-June. There will also be a mailing in August with specific class assignments, standardized test scores, registration forms and supply lists. If you would like this information sent to an address other than what we have on file, please let the Lower School office know.

Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions or if you would like suggestions for some great read-aloud material to enjoy with your student.

Warmly,

Mrs. Fisher
