Weekly Notes from the Head of Lower School, 5/6

At the end of the day, the most overwhelming key to a child’s success is the positive involvement of parents.
~ Jane D Hull, Governor of Arizona (1997 to 2003)

Dear Families,

It is Teacher Appreciation Week, and as we stop to take a moment to thank the fabulous teachers at Palm Valley School, I say ”Thanks to YOU!” to our families from the bottom of my heart. Nothing can replace what happens in the classroom, and while parents are not expected to become the teacher, all of you have been providing extra support, supervision, and encouragement for the students. We are all in this together.

As many of you know, Mrs. Susan Rice’s last day was this past Monday. She had a huge impact on our school and will be missed. I am looking forward to having everyone get to know our new Head, Dr. Steven Sherman. I have had a few meetings with him already. His enthusiasm and passion for education is contagious, and the future of Palm Valley School looks bright!

We had Firebird Friday for the first time last week. This is a day for students to catch up on assignments and complete Specialist assignments if they so desire. Many students joined the virtual hangout with me, and I’ll be inviting students again this week. Teachers will post optional assignments for those who want them. I will provide links to extra-curricular opportunities such as virtual field trips and live web-cams. However, I strongly encourage students to take some time to just be kids! Play outside, weather permitting, read a book, make a craft, draw, create, bake, or spend time with family.

Normally, we have a Lower School Talent Show in May or June. Though we are not physically together, the show must go on! We will have a virtual talent show this year on Friday, May 22nd! I’ll be sending details in the next week and posting the information on Google Classroom and Class Dojo. In the meantime, please encourage your student to enter, and practice practice, practice.

In my opinion, the most difficult part of Distance Learning is the lost connections with friends and teachers. I miss the kids so very much! I’d like to begin calling individual students to say hello and briefly chat; with parental permission, of course. Being mindful of parents’ needs, I’ll be scheduling these with you via this document: phone call sign up You can sign your child up for a quick call on a specific day and time. The information in this document is confidential and will only be seen by me. Calls will begin tomorrow, May 7thIf you are unable to find a time slot this week, I’ll set up another series of days and times.

Last week, Lower School students had an opportunity to enter the SumDog Math Contest. Here are the results:
