Weekly Notes from the Head of Lower School, 4/17

Com·mu·ni·ty
Noun: a feeling of fellowship with others, as a result of sharing common attitudes, interests, and goals.

Dear Lower School Families,

One of the things I love most about our school is our community. Though there are many members of the PVS community, all have one common goal-  the safety, well-being, and education of our students. The faculty and staff know our students so well, they can tell if a child is having a bad day just by looking at him or her. I see and hear the students looking out for each other and making sure their peers are included. One example is the Kindness Project, which was developed by our Girl Scout Troop and will start in earnest after the Spring Break. Every student will decorate a rock with a positive message or affirmation. They'll write their name on the back of the rock. The idea is to give the rock to someone they see that could use a kind word. The person who receives it makes a tally mark on the back and passes it on. At the end of the year, we'll return the rocks to their owner who will be able to see the impact this gesture had on others.

Our families, many of whom are still involved in our Lower School even though their child is now in Middle or Upper School! The library committee is one example. They decorate our Lower School library each month. On Friday, April 19th they will greet our students and give them a special poem to keep for Poem in Your Pocket Day. We have room parents who work behind the scenes organizing drivers for field trips and assisting teachers when needed. Our Parent Association is incredibly supportive of the Lower School and will provide ice cream after the Talent Show.

Community! That's what makes PVS great! Please join us on Friday, May 3rd at 7:30 am in the Middle School Courtyard for Flapjack for Families. Our administration team will be treating you to breakfast to say thanks for being part of this community.
