Weekly Notes from the Head of Lower School, 2/26

If you want your children to be intelligent, read them fairy tales. If you want them to be more intelligent, read them more fairy tales– Albert Einstein

Dear Families,

As we move into March, the overall theme is Read, Read, Read! Several events kick off one of my favorite months of the school year: Read Across America Day, the annual Read-A-Thon, and our annual Book Fair! These three events are opportunities to share your love of books, encourage reading, and find time to read, read, read with your child. There's a great article on the importance of reading in a digital age that I thought I'd share: READ

Lost and FoundPlease remember to label your students' winter jackets. We have had several appear unlabeled in the Lost and Found shelf in the Lower School Office. Items that have been left around campus will be on display in the quad area of the Lower School for the next week. Unclaimed items will be disposed of or donated to the Spirit Store.

PVS Student Sara Habibipour has been chosen to participate in the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's Student of the Year program. Your child received a form on Monday that explains the campaign. If you would like to participate, complete the form and return it to the office with your donation by this Friday, February 28! Checks must be post-dated on March 19, 2020. For each donation of at least $20, you'll receive a T-shirt that can be worn on Spirit Fridays. The class that raises the most money will receive a free dress day!

Read Across America:  We encourage all students to celebrate this day on Monday, March 2nd by dressing up as a favorite character from a book. Teachers will be asking participating students to share about the character and the title of the book.

Read-A-Thon: We kick off our annual Read-A-Thon on Monday, March 2nd. Students can earn prizes for logging minutes read and money raised. We are going to kick things off on Monday by having schoolwide reading time. The information will go home on Friday.

Stay tuned for information on the Scholastic Bookfair, Tuesday - Friday, March 10th - 13th.

Our second Student-Led Conference Day is Wednesday, March 4th. There is no school, but we will have a mini-camp.

We will also have a mini-camp on Monday, March 9th. This is a Professional Development Day, and there is no school. Please go online to sign up for either mini-camp.

2019-2020 Palm Valley School Yearbook: It is that time of year again to buy yearbooks for this school year. The prices will be going up as we approach the deadline for purchasing yearbooks. Below is the timeline for when the price goes up which has a deadline on April, 24th, 2020. You are able to pay online using this Lifetouch link or you can make a payment with Sarai in our Administration Building in person. The PVS code for our online link is 12453420.

$55 from Feb. 1 - Feb.29
$60 March 1 - March 31
$65 April 1 - April 24

If you would like to purchase and design a 1/4, 1/2 or full page advertisement in the yearbook, they are due next Friday, March 6.  You can order ads online or pay at the front desk just as you would a yearbook. You may email Ms. Straky for more details or if you have any questions at sstraky@pvs.org

Friday, March 13th is Grandparents’ and Special Friends’ Day. On this day, we will be inviting all our Grandparents and Special Friends to come in for a light breakfast provided by our Parents Association.
Students are preparing a special performance at 8:45 in the gym. Following this, our guests are invited to visit the classrooms and our book fair. Students are dismissed at noon, and there is no lunch provided. We will have After Care available.

El Paseo Fashion Week: We're excited to announce that the six student models are now set for the night on the runway presented by Palm Springs Life, Palm Valley School and Animal Samaritans at the Le Chien fashion show on March 22, 2020. Each of the four PVS divisions (Preschool, Lower School, Middle School, and Upper School) is represented, so there is probably someone you and your student know bravely taking their turn in the spotlight to benefit the school. Come enjoy an evening of fun, fashion and family and offer your support to them and Palm Valley!
