Dear Lower School Families,
It is a tradition for my family to get together for Thanksgiving. There are usually more than 40 of us, and we go to a location with no cell or wifi service. It’s great to see all of the young kids playing old-fashioned games, reading, and enjoying each other's company. As I was boarding the plane to return home, I couldn’t help notice the number of young children glued to the screens of tablets and smartphones.
Though studies show that there is a negative correlation between the use of mobile devices and language in toddlers, the reality is that most of us will give our children access to devices. The key is to have boundaries on the amount of time we allow children to connect. This article has some great information and advice for families. Another great resource is comonsensemedia.org. There is a lot of information about limiting screentime with older children.
Here is some information on events and important dates in the Lower School:
We will be hosting a Shoe Drive for kids at Bubbling Wells Elementary, a local public elementary school, to ensure that they all have sturdy shoes to run, play and jump in. We are looking for donations of new shoes that meet the following criteria: unisex colored (black, blue, red) athletic shoes in kids sizes 13-5. Please deposit your donations at the LS front desk before December 15.
Saturday, December 16th, is PVS Day at the Renova Ice Rink at The River at Rancho Mirage - 20% of ticket sales (with flyer) will benefit PVS. We will send home the flyer next week that you must present to receive credit.
We have our traditional “Ugly Sweater Day” planned by the Parent Association on Wednesday, December 20th. The students can wear a fun holiday sweater, and enjoy some hot cocoa in the Lower School campus from 7:30 to 8:00 am.Then, join the rest of the Palm Valley students in a parade of ugly sweaters in the gym. Please note that student MUST wear uniform bottoms, socks or leggings, and athletic shoes. No exceptions.
Thursday, December 21st is our annual Winter Sing. This will be held at the gym from 9:00 am to 10:30 am. Students must be in dress uniform. However, they can have holiday hats, socks, or leggings.
We have a half day of school before the Winter Break. On Friday, December 22nd, students will be dismissed at noon. There is no lunch or After-Care that day. It is also Pajama Day! Students can wear pajamas to school. Please make sure students are modestly dressed; there are no bare midriffs, spaghetti straps, or extra short pajamas. For safety, athletic shoes only, please.
As you are doing holiday grocery shopping, remember you can support PVS by collecting Box Tops for Education. Palm Valley School is participating in the Box Tops for Education program. You can drop them off at the Lower School. If you have questions, please contact Sarah Dunn (email@example.com).
We will have TWO mini camp sessions for PS-Grade 5 during the break- December 27 - 29 & January 3 - 5. Click here for more information and to sign up. Tell your friends!
Have a wonderful week!
