Weekly Notes from the Head of Lower School, 1/24

“If there is no struggle, there is no progress.” -Frederick Douglass

Dear Families,

As we come to the end of the second academic quarter, I am reminded of this quote. Students will be bringing home report cards on Monday, February 12th, and most cannot wait to share their grades with you. As they do so, I advise you to look not only at the letter grade but your students' progress since the beginning of the year. That "G" or "B" or "S" or "A" only tells part of the story and does not reflect perseverance, effort or growth. Each of these factors contributes to developing a Growth Mindset, which, as I have written about in prior emails, and is the key to success beyond college.

As always, there is much going on in our Lower School:

Thanks to everyone who supported the Jump Rope for Heart event. We will be presenting a check to the American Heart Association this Friday, January 26th during the All-School Assembly at 8:20 in the gym.

Our last Admissions Open House on Sunday, January 28th from 1:00 - 4:00. This is a great time to bring friends and show them our wonderful school! Classroom and Specialist teachers will be here to answer questions. There will be some fun hands-on activities, as well. RSVP here.

Our next Dinner Out event is on Thursday, February 1st at California Pizza Kitchen. 20% of your purchase will benefit PVS. This includes dine-in and takeout. We will send flyers home with the Phoenix on Friday that has a coupon you’ll need to present.

It's not too late to purchase tickets to our Annual Gala. For more information, visit pvs.org/annual-gala.

Move Up Day is on Friday, February 16th. This is an opportunity for students to spend time at the next grade level, get to know the teachers and see what they have to look forward to next year. This is extra special for 5th Graders! They will spend the morning and lunch in 6th grade, and will attend Advisory classes at the end of the day! This day, 5th graders will be dismissed from the Middle School at 3:20 pm. 5th Grade families are invited to Q & A session with Mr. Josh Brooks, Head of Middle School at 3:25 pm in the Multi-purpose Room. He will be able to answer all your questions about what to expect in 6th Grade.

Our Pre-K students will come to Kindergarten this day and have an activity with Mrs. Marron and Mrs. Van Vliet. After this, our families can meet the Kindergarten teachers, at 9:30 am. They’ll learn about our unparalleled Kindergarten program and get a tour of the school.

I am happy to announce that this year's Middle School play is Alice In Wonderland, Jr. I encourage you to mark your calendars and plan to attend one of the performances coming in April and early May. There are even some matinee performances. Visit pvs.org/tickets for more information.

The 2018-2019 school calendar has been finalized. Feel free to download a copy here.
