Weekly Notes from the Head of Lower School, 12/4

"In all aspects of our lives balance is key. Doing one thing too much can cause upset, like the old saying goes, everything in moderation is the secret!"  ~ Catherine Pulsifer

Dear Families,

It is a tradition for my family to get together for Thanksgiving. There are usually more than 40 of us, and we go to a location with no cell or wifi service. It was interesting to hear the complaints from the children in the beginning of the break, but after a while, they started playing old-fashioned games, reading, and enjoying each other. I must admit, it was difficult for some of us adults to have to forego the online Black Friday sales.

With the holidays upon us, I suspect many of you are considering some form of electronic device as a gift.

Though studies show that there is a negative correlation between the use of mobile devices and language in toddlers, the reality is that most of us will give our children access to devices. The key is to have boundaries on the amount of time we allow children to connect. This article has some great information and advice for families: Tech talk  Another great resource is comonsensemedia.org There are great articles on limiting screen time with older children.

Ugly Sweater DayThis has become a Palm Valley tradition! Students are invited to wear an Ugly Sweater to school today. Buddy groups will meet in the gym at 8:20 am and have a parade to show off their unusual holiday sweaters. This will be followed by a cup of hot chocolate, courtesy of our Parent Association. Parents and families are invited to join us! Students must wear regular uniform bottoms, socks, and athletic shoes.

Spirit WeekStudents are welcome to participate. If they choose not to, regular uniforms are required. For safety reasons athletic shoes must be worn every day:

Annual Fund
Each year, the Palm Valley School community contributes to enhancing the education of our Firebirds through the Annual Fund.  There is always a 100% participation from members of the Board of Trustees and from PVS staff members showing their Firebird pride.  This annual fund is important to our students and families at Palm Valley. Please remember to submit your contribution or gift in kind.  Please click on the link to give today!

Uniforms: Our used uniform stock is low, especially for dress uniform components. If your child has outgrown his or her uniform and it is in good condition, please consider donating it. Laundered items can be dropped off at the Lower School Office. Also, please note that all sweaters, sweatshirts, and outerwear must be purchased from Norman’s Uniforms or our Spirit Store only. Please make sure you write your child’s name on the label in case it gets lost.
