Weekly Notes from the Head of Lower School, 12/19

Dear Families,

2019 is just twelve days away! As we approach the end of the year, I look back with pride at all the students and teachers have accomplished these past few months. Student learning and hands-on discovery take center stage in and out of the classroom. Teachers are finding innovative ways to work with their students whether one on one, in small groups, or as a whole group to keep them challenged. One of my favorite things to do is walk into the classrooms and witness students collaborating on a task or hearing their excitement when they solve a problem. I cannot wait to see what 2019 holds for our Lower School community.

I hope you had the opportunity to attend the annual Winter Sing, "Splendor and Peace" last week. The performance was wonderful. A special thank you to Mr. Kay. His passion for teaching music is evident!

Tomorrow, December 20th is the final round of the Lower School Spelling Bee. Five finalists from each class will compete, and we will have a champ from 2nd/3rd grade and one from 4th/5th grade. These students will compete against one another to find an overall winner. Good luck to everyone!

Our Puttin' on the Ritz Early Bird ticket sales end this Friday, December 21st!Purchase your Gala tickets or Early Bird table now to save $50: www.pvs.org/gala19. Enjoy a sit-down dinner and dessert, signature cocktails, a live auction, casino-style gaming, and more! Put on your glitz, ritz, and glam for an evening to remember. The Puttin' on the Ritz Gala will be held at The Ritz-Carlton, Rancho Mirage on Saturday, March 2nd at 6 pm.

When students visit the Lower School library in January, they will be treated to a Book Tasting. A Book Tasting is a great activity to showcase our school library collection to both avid readers, reluctant readers and those in between. The goal of the book tasting is that students will leave with at least one title of a book (hopefully more) that they are excited about using as an independent reading book. We will be featuring several new titles and students will learn how to choose "just the right book." A special thank you to Ms. Agoglia, Mrs. Jones, Mrs. Habibipour, Mrs. Laule, Ms. Scheil, and Mrs. Hawthorne. More details to follow.

Our Administrative offices are open on December 26th - 28th and January 2nd - 4th from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. We will also have mini-camps available those days. For more information or to sign up, visit www.pvs.org/camps. Please remember that students are dismissed at noon this Friday, December 21st. There is no lunch or After-Care available and offices are closed.

I want to take this opportunity to thank our wonderful Parent Association, Room Parents, and parent volunteers for their support of the students and teachers. Everyone makes a difference, and you are not taken for granted.

It is now time to take a well-deserved break. I hope you get the chance to relax and spend time with your family/friends and come back excited about 2019! I wish each of you the happiest of holidays and a Happy New Year!

Mrs. Fisher
