Weekly Notes from the Head of Lower School, 11/8

Palm Valley School is an exceptional learning community that educates, nurtures, and challenges each student to achieve excellence and contribute to our global society.

Dear Lower School Families,

This month, our students are involved in two service learning projects. Service learning focuses on the specific needs of communities and involves student participation in projects while discovering and learning about the people, agency, or organization with whom they are helping.

Students in the Lower School are making Thanksgiving themed placemats. Our student council will be delivering these to Vista Cove, an assisted living facility in Rancho Mirage. Classroom discussions have revolved around the residents and why some need to live in these types of facilities and how we can help brighten their lives.

There is also a school-wide service learning project to show our support and gratitude for the men and women serving in our armed services. Preschool will be drawing pictures, Lower School will be writing letters, and Middle and Upper School will be collecting, sorting, and packaging items to send to Support Our Troops for distribution during the holiday season. LS students have begun their letters. I read one of the Kindergarten letters which said, “Thank you for fighting for our freedom. I hope you will be with us forever.”

These and other projects certainly help our students learn the importance of contributing to our global society!

Our annual Veterans' Day assembly will be this Friday, November 10th at 9:00 am in the Gym. This is one of our Palm Valley traditions for which I am most proud. Students are expected to wear dress uniforms to school and families in attendance, feel free to visit the Lower School for complimentary coffee from the Parent Association. I encourage everyone to plan on attending as we honor all of those who have and are serving our country.

First Quarter report cards will go home on Monday, November 13th.
