Weekly Notes from the Head of Lower School, 11/29

Dear Lower School Families

Welcome back! I hope you and the family had a wonderful Thanksgiving and a great break. If your holidays are anything like ours, there is lots of cooking, eating, and shopping in addition to spending time with the family. Whether in the kitchen or at the grocery store, there are great opportunities to help your child develop his or her numeracy skills. Developing numeracy skills, (also known as number sense), is crucial for students to build a foundation and succeed in mathematics.

According to Marilyn Burns, one of the most highly respected mathematical educators, "Students who have developed numeracy skills have a sense of what numbers mean, understand their relationship to one another, are able to perform mental math, symbolic representations, and can use those numbers in real-world situations."

Whether you take the opportunity to have your child estimate the grocery bill, double a recipe, count money or make change, I encourage you to seize the opportunity to help your student relate math to their everyday lives. If you’d like more information, this article has a wonderful summary and some helpful hints.

Our Lower School is growing! The Carder family started school this week. Kaden, 3rd grade, and Kole, 5th grade started school on Monday. Please join me in welcoming them to the Palm Valley Community.

Did you receive your Gala invitation? Your student was sent home with a special invitation, just for you. If you haven’t seen it yet, please ask your student!

As a reminder, Norman’s uniforms will be on campus on Thursday, November 30th from 2:30 pm - 5:30 pm in the Upper School Lobby. This is a great time to purchase outerwear for your student(s).

You can pre-order a yearbook and take advantage of Early Bird pricing of $45 until December 31st. After this, the price will be $50 until January 31st and will go up again after that. Order online and use the school code 12453418. You can also purchase an ad online.

We have our traditional “Ugly Sweater Day” planned by the Parent Association on Wednesday, December 20th. The students can wear a fun holiday sweater, enjoy some hot cocoa, and join the rest of the Palm Valley students in a parade of ugly sweaters.

The following day, Thursday, December 21st is our annual Winter Sing. This will be held at the gym from 9:00 am to 10:30 am.

We have a half day of school before the Winter Break. On Friday, December 22nd, students will be dismissed at noon. There is no lunch or after school care that day. Students will return to school on January 8th. We will have a mini camp session during the break- January 3 - 5. Click here for more information and to sign up.

Have a wonderful week!
