Weekly Notes from the Head of Lower School, 10/10

Dear Families,

It is essential for students to feel safe and secure while in school. We work with students on fire, earthquake, online, and general safety throughout the school year. October is Safety Month. We are participating in the "Great California ShakeOut" on Thursday, October 18th at 10:18 am. This is a time where most schools, government offices, and many businesses practice what to do in an earthquake. Our students and teachers will practice "duck, cover, and hold," along with our all-school evacuation procedure. For more information, visit https://www.shakeout.org/california/.

We will have a fire truck at the Lower School on Monday, October 15th at 8:30 am. Firefighters will be speaking to the first graders about fire safety, being prepared, and having a plan at home. We will also have a visitor from the police department in the coming weeks. (For your information, Preschool has scheduled their annual safety day for Wednesday, October 17th at 9 am. There will be a fire truck, ambulance, and police car on campus.)

There is some excellent information for teaching safety aimed at three - nine-year-olds. Many of our teachers use the tools from this website. There are materials for you to help make a safety plan for your home, videos about what to do in a fire or emergency, stranger danger, and more: https://rocketrules.org/

Congratulations to our Lower School Student Council for the first semester:
President: Ava Bagheri
Vice President: Gunner Boring
Event Coordinators: Steven Hernandez and Caleb Kassinove
Environmentalists: Nicholas Chavez and Gabby Elbaz

I am also proud to announce that, under the direction of our art specialist, Mr. Kroe, three of our students, Ava Bagheri, 5th grade, Hayden Gray, 5th grade, and Silvanita Garcia, 1st grade, were winners in the Main Street Palm Springs banner contest. There were 50 winners chosen from over 800 student entries this year. The banners will be hung along Palm Canyon Drive in Palm Springs and remain for one year!

We have several classes attending field trips in the next few weeks. Students must arrive at school in their dress uniforms. We do not call home or have loaners to give to students. If your child requires a car seat, you can drop it off at the students' classroom, (not the office, please), in the morning and retrieve it at pickup. Thanks to those of you who have turned in the forms and proof of insurance to enable you to drive students on field trips. Teachers are always in need of driver volunteers. Please consider doing so.

Best Regards,

Mrs. Fisher
