Weekly Notes from the Head of Lower School, 1/8

“Approach the New Year with resolve to find the opportunities hidden in each new day. ” – Michael Josephson

Dear Families,

I hope you had a restful break surrounded by family and friends, and like me, are looking forward to the rest of the school year.

This week’s quote is especially meaningful to me as it describes an essential part of the art of teaching. Real learning takes place when a student can take the concepts they learn in class and apply them to real-world situations. With real-world applications, students develop a deeper understanding. According to Harriett Sanford, president, and CEO of the NEA Foundation, “Far too often, we simply don’t capture students’ imagination and help them connect what they do in the classroom with the world around them. To use a non-science metaphor, we give students nouns in the classroom when they’re looking for verbs.”

Our teachers try to find hidden opportunities to help students make these connections. You can do the same! If students are learning fractions, can you get a favorite recipe and double it? What about giving them a part of your grocery list and a budget? They can help shop with you and estimate the total bill. Check with your teacher for other ideas.

Head of School Search:
This week, the Chair of the Search Committee, Mrs. Cherise Sonderman has invited parents to meet the first of several candidates for our next Head of School. You are an important part of the process! You are invited to meet the candidates and give feedback to the Search Committee. I encourage all of our families to attend and participate in these meetings. Move Up Day is one of our students’ favorite events!
