Weekly Notes from the Head of Lower School, 1/30

Dear Families,

Can you believe it is almost February? I am just getting used to writing 2019, rather than 2018! As usual, the Lower School is abuzz with activity. We have a cultural presentation, the 100th Day of School, Move-Up Day, and more. The third quarter has begun, and all students are in the midst of learning and discovery.

It is that time of year again, it’s Girl Scout Cookie time! Our Palm Valley Girl Scout Troop, #112 will be selling cookies at morning drop off Thursday, January 31st and Friday, February 1st from 7:30 am - 8:00 am. Please remember to park in one of the designated parking spots if you’d like to make a purchase. DO NOT leave your car unattended.

Session 4 of our hot lunch program begins Monday, February 11th. Please print and complete the new order form and return to your division's front desk by Thursday, February 7th. Forms went home yesterday, but you can download another by clicking here.

Some of our International Students from China will be giving a presentation about the symbols, traditions, and meaning of Chinese New Year on Tuesday, February 5th in the Lower School Amphitheater. There will be some demonstrations and a chance to sample dumplings!

Mark your calendars for a complimentary screening of the film, Won’t You Be My Neighbor? on Tuesday, February 5th at 5:00 pm in the MPR. This showing is for adults only (no childcare provided) and there will be a short Q & A after the conclusion of the film - RSVP here. It is open to the public, so please bring your friends!

Thursday, February 7th is the 100th Day of School. Teachers will be doing various activities throughout the day with their students. The students will also get together with their buddy classes to do a special activity together.

Friday, February 8th is a Special Awards Assembly where 5th through 12th graders who earn Honor Roll or High Honor Roll will be recognized. Last week, I inadvertently said we would notify parents if their student was receiving an award. All families are invited to attend the assembly which starts at 8:15 am in the gym where the recipients will be announced.

February 8th is also Move Up Day!  This day is a favorite Palm Valley School tradition. All students in Kindergarten through Fifth Grade will “move up” and spend the morning with the grade above. Teachers will be available in classes after school to answer any questions you may have about our program.

The next dinner out event is coming up Wednesday, February 13th at The Slice - Rancho Mirage. Present the flyer or mention Palm Valley School and 20% of your purchase will benefit the Parent Association. Valid for dine-in and takeout from 11 am - Close.

Our Second Quarter Specialist Teacher newsletter is complete. Click here to view. I guarantee you will be impressed!

February Break is the week of February 19th - February 22nd. Ms. McGrew has some great activities planned for camps that week. Visit pvs.org/camps to sign up.

There are just 2 DAYS LEFT to make your donation toward qualifying for our Family Ice Cream Social this Friday, February 1st! You can give in person by visiting the Business Office or online at pvs.org/support-pvs/annual-fund. Currently, our 10th grade class is in the lead with 63%, followed closely by Kindergarten at 61%.

Thank you for all you do to support our teachers and students!
