Weekly Notes from Head of Lower School, 5/29

“Sometimes when we are generous in small, barely detectable ways, it can change someone else’s life forever.”  -Margaret Cho

Dear Families,

Our First Grade students were so proud and excited to present FIND Food bank with their donation. These students learned how the food bank works and how many meals (1,000!) they are providing with their donation. It is our goal at Palm Valley School to have students see how they can make an impact through our various service learning projects. These experiences will not soon be forgotten, and hopefully, our students will continue to do good works after they leave our school.

As you know, First through Fifth-grade students completed the CTP V tests last week. We will be sending out the results of the tests in our June mailing. This test is the newest version of the CTP and is much more rigorous than the CTP IV. It was revised to test students using NCTM (National Council of Teachers of Mathematics), and NCTE, National Council of Teachers of English), standards. The past version used the Common Core Standards.  Because of this change, most schools anticipate seeing a modest drop in overall scores as they adjust their curriculum and pacing and teach the higher standards.

The CTP test is a wonderful tool for teachers and families to see areas of needed growth. It is just one of many pieces of your child's academic puzzle. We will send the results and a guide for interpreting the scores.  I am available during the summer to answer any questions you may have.
