Weekly Notes from Head of Lower School, 5/1

Dear Lower School Families,

It’s already May! This means higher temperatures, more outdoor activities, and standardized testing! Standardized testing is one of many tools we use to track students’ development and progress over time. The great thing about the CTP V is that it allows us to see any areas of instruction that may need attention. For example, this year, we are focusing on Auditory Comprehension skills for First - Third grade students.

Students in First through Fifth grade will be taking the CTP V (ERB) testing May 20th - 24th. Most independent school students take this assessment. CTP stands for the Comprehensive Testing Program (CTP) developed by the Educational Records Bureau, (ERB). It is a rigorous assessment for high achieving students in areas such as reading, listening, vocabulary, writing, and mathematics. Verbal and quantitative reasoning subtests are part of the CTP beginning in Grade 3. The CTP helps compare content specific, curriculum-based performance to the more conceptual knowledge base found in reasoning tests. Click here for a link to parent information: ERB/CTP V

There is no way to study or prepare for the CTP V, but teachers do work with students on test-taking skills, and review. Since the testing is completed online, we receive scores sooner than in the past and will send them home with students mid-June.

In addition to the CTP V, students in Third through Fifth grade take the WrAP writing assessment May 28th - 31st. I will discuss the WrAP writing assessment in next week’s e-blast.

Today is #PVSDayofGiving19! We are closer to our goals than ever before and need your help! As is our tradition, our spring "PVS Day of Giving" is a last chance opportunity for families and supporters to contribute to our annual fund efforts before the end of the school year. Please consider giving to honor a favorite teacher, your student, or memory of a loved one. Leave a note of thanks, congratulations, or tell us why you give and we'll post it on social media along with a thank you! Give your gift on Facebook, online, or in person before midnight tonight.
