Weekly Notes from Head of Lower School, 10/2

The world is hugged by the faithful arms of volunteers. ~Terri Guillemets

Dear Families,

I want to rewrite this quote and say, “Our school is hugged by the faithful arms of our volunteers,” and thank everyone for the countless hugs! Our wonderful library committee, Mrs. Habibipour, Mrs. Ozturk, Mrs. Britz, and Mrs. Laule have re-organized, cataloged new books, and spent several hours preparing the library for its 2019-2020 opening last week. Of course, our library angels, Mrs. Jones, and Ms. Hawthorne have some special October decorations planned for students when they visit next week.

We have a fantastic team of Room Parents who are working with Mrs. Linsday Davis, our Lower School Vice President. Be sure and check the class Shutterfly accounts for volunteer opportunities and news about the classroom.

Last week, we had the first field trip to the McCallum Theater and another trip planned for October 29th. These trips would not be possible without our volunteer driver/chaperones.

The Halloween festivities on October 31st and the Fall Festival on November 2nd will not be possible without our supportive parent volunteers. Several of you have signed up to assist the teachers in class. On behalf of the faculty, thank you, thank you, thank you!

Here are some things to know:
Next Wednesday, October 9th is Student-Led Conference Day. If you have not yet signed up for a time with the teacher, please do so. I found a great article about the value of Student-Led Conferences that may be of some interest: click. We do not have classes that day, but we will have a mini-camp. Click here for more information.

There is another mini-camp offered on Monday, October 14th when school is closed for teacher Professional Development. click

Our October Dinner out is taking place on Tuesday, October 15th from 11 am to 9 pm at The Slice in Rancho Mirage. The restaurant will donate 20% of the proceeds to our school. Please present this flyer when ordering.

Students began practicing for Space: the Musical. Everyone is quite excited. Because of scheduling, there will be just one performance on Friday, October 18, at 7:00 pm in the Gym. The Saturday matinee is canceled. We will be sending detailed information next week. Please plan on attending this exciting production.

I hope to see everyone at the Effective Financial Planning Night presentation on Thursday, October 24th, at 5:30 pm in the MPR. This informative meeting will show how to develop a plan to meet your children’s college education and your retirement needs.

Halloween is coming soon! Teachers will send details soon. In the meantime, as you plan your child’s costume, please note, we do encourage students to dress up and have fun but remember- no blood, no masks, no weapons, no full face paint, and no revealing costumes. Students must wear athletic shoes for the entire day.

Friday, October 4th: Free Dress Day - please be mindful of the Free Dress Day guidelines
