Eblast from the Head of Lower School, 2/28

“Failure is ALWAYS an option. If things are not failing, you are not innovating.”
Elon Musk

Dear Lower School Families,

I don’t know about you, but I have been fascinated with the photos and information being transmitted by Perseverance, the Mars rover! We have come far since the Apollo missions when I would sit glued to the TV to watch the splashdowns. Elon Musk’s quote resonates with me. Can you imagine the number of failures there must have been before the July 30, 2020 launch? If our students indeed adopted this attitude about failures and viewed them as opportunities, imagine what they could discover! (In case you want to follow Perseverance and get up-to-date images and information, click here: MARS!! )

As always, a lot is happening in the next few weeks:

  • Student-Led Conferences, Friday, March 5th:  Teachers will be sending home sign-up sheets to book your appointment. We ask that you arrive on time and notify the office if you are running late that day. There is no school or mini-camps, but your child is a part of the conference. Our Upper School California Scholarship Federation honor students will have a car wash during the morning of Student-Led Conferences. They’ll be washing the outside of cars in the parking lot adjacent to the Lower-School playground from 8:30-11:30 a.m. (The suggested minimum donation is $5.) Funds raised will be used to pay for tassels, stoles, and pins for these Sealbearers (those graduating with honors).
  • We'll be Professional Development Day, Monday, March 8th: The students are off this day, and there is no mini-camp provided.
  • Scholastic Book Fair, March 9th - 22nd: This year, our Scholastic Book Fair will be completely virtual. When you purchase books from Scholastic, your orders will be sent directly to your home and if you spend $25 or more, shipping will be free! The proceeds directly benefit our PVS teachers. Our school uses the proceeds to build up classroom libraries and purchase supplemental materials. LINK TO BOOKFAIR: PVS Bookfair If you need suggestions, please reach out to the classroom teacher. (They will be putting together a class wishlist and sending it home if you are interested in donating to the class library.)
Box Tops for Education
Box Tops for Education is now online and digital, with an easy-to-use app. Families can download the Box Tops app and scan their receipt(s) within 14 days of purchase to earn cash (typically 10 cents per Box Top item, although additional incentives are offered). If you have questions, our PVS Box Tops for Education Coordinator is Sarah Dunn, dienys@hotmail.com.

Amazon Smile
Don’t forget, when families purchase from Amazon, visiting smile.amazon.com first and indicating PVS as their donation site of choice will bring monies into our school (plus it will now remember PVS for each purchase once you have indicated it the first time), a small percent (0.5%) of that purchase will benefit our school.

‘The Firebird Oasis’ - PVS Event (Adults Only) - March 27, 6pm
We have already reached 50% capacity! Now is the time to purchase your tickets or table to The Firebird Oasis, as attendance is limited.  You're invited to connect with the PVS community at this first-annual event that reinvents the traditional school 'gala'. Join us for the opportunity to socialize safely outdoors, discover a new cocktail with tasting stations, jam out to music outside of your living room, enjoy delicious food made by someone else, participate in pop-up party games, and bid on unique live auction items - all while supporting the school! Dust your party shoes off, rock your favorite mask, and get ready for an evening to remember.
