Eblast from the Head of Lower School, 1/24

“Intelligence plus character—that is the goal of true education.”
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Dear Families,

This quote by Dr. King, one of my heroes, is a favorite. As educators, we are responsible for helping our students develop empathy, compassion, self-confidence, and respect for themselves and others. We do so through finding teachable moments, Morning Meetings, and our Word of the Month program. Conflict resolution, effective ways to express opinions, and self-advocacy are a part of the social/emotional teaching and learning in the Lower School. Each educator is committed to the mission and values of Palm Valley School.

Tomorrow is the first day of Semester Two and Quarter Three. Report cards will be sent home with students on Tuesday, February 2nd. Please sign and return the report card acknowledgment form that is enclosed with the report.

The 100th Day of School is Monday, February 8th. Each class finds ways to celebrate this day with games and activities related to 100. This year, we invite students to dress as a 100-year-old! (If they do not wish to participate, the regular uniform is required, and please wear athletic shoes.)

Speaking of uniforms, here is a gentle reminder. As we transition from Norman’s Uniforms to another vendor, polo shirts and bottoms may not be available in your child’s size. If this is the case, we will allow you to purchase items in the same colors from other vendors. Palm Valley School sweatshirts and hoodies are readily available from the Spirit Store, and these must have the PVS logo. Shoes should be as close to a solid color as possible, be unobtrusive in appearance, and lack unusually bright colors. Socks or leggings may be worn but should be in solid colors- white, black, tan, brown, grey, or red only- no logos or embellishments, please. You can refer to the handbook or reach out to your teacher if you have any questions.

Save the date! Thursday, February 18th, from 1:00 to 5:00 pm. The Living Desert is offering a special Family Field Trip! They are opening the facility to PVS families for a special price- $8.00 per child and $12.00 (total) for up to two adults. What a great way to see the new exhibits and have some family time. Look for an eblast and voucher!

The Red Cross will be doing some virtual presentations on disaster preparedness during the week of February 1st. The Kindergarten - Second-grade presentation, Prepare with Pedro, focuses on being prepared in the event of a fire. The Pillowcase Project is aimed at Third through Fifth Grade and focuses on fire and earthquake preparedness.
