Monday Notes, Message from the Head of School 10/2

"The more you praise and celebrate your life, the more there is in life to celebrate." - Oprah Winfrey

Dear Palm Valley Families,

It's hard to believe that October is already here! The change in the weather has been nice for all of us, and the fall always brings fun events for all our Firebird families. Our big event each fall is the Annual Fall Festival. This year, this event will be held on Saturday, October 28 from noon to 4 pm on our field and surrounding areas. Our event coordinators from the Parent Association this year are Kelly Levy and Mary Jensen, and they have a fun and festive day planned for all ages. Admission is free, and many games and activities are included, but for a small charge, there will be vendors of all kinds there to partake in! Please join us!

Friday, October 13 is a big day for us! Our Peace Pole Dedication is at 10 am at the Lower School Campus. Our Peace Pole will be among the over 100,000 around the world. You are cordially invited to attend. Please note, Lower School students must be in dress uniform for this event.

Later this day (Friday, October 13) at 1:45 pm, we will have our first Pep Rallyof the year to celebrate all our Fall Athletic teams! Middle School Flag Football, Girls Volleyball, and Cross Country will join our Upper School Boys and Girls Volleyball and Cross Country teams to wrap up the fall season with cheering and games. All MS and US students are encouraged to wear red on this day (Spirit Shirt Friday) to support our teams and to send them into the final weeks of their seasons with a lot of Firebird Spirit! Parents and families are also welcome to join us for this great event put on and organized by our Upper School ASB students. Go Firebirds!

October is also the time when we all get to show off our Halloween spirit with our big parade and assembly, this year held on Tuesday morning, October 31. Students will all report to the gym at 8:30 and then parade down the hill for all the students to cheer one another on and see our costumes! Parents and Families are welcome to join us that day to see all the great costumes and take photos, etc. Please see your child's classroom teachers in Lower School and Preschool for guidelines regarding classroom parties and celebrations that are also happening that day.

While there is so much adversity and turmoil in our country and our world right now, it's reassuring to know that our little school is still a place for safety, happiness, growth, and progress. While our students are joyful and learning each day, our campus is safe and secure, and our faculty and staff are here every day to ensure that our school is moving in all the right directions - we do not shy away from discussing the larger world and what we can and should do to help. My heart goes out to the families affected by the senseless and horrific tragedy in Las Vegas this morning. As a graduate of the University of Nevada and as someone who taught for 10+ years there, I know Nevada to be a place full of great families and loving people. My heart breaks for them today.

Additionally, my thoughts have been with those affected by the Hurricanes in the southern states, the US Virgin Islands, and to Puerto Rico, these past few weeks - our Firebirds brought items in and have sent care packages to them all in the hope that our little contribution can help in some small way. With so much to worry about in the lives of our global society who are facing adversity and even tragedy right now, I am grateful for all that our community does to help others and for the big hearts and generosity of our students and their families. This is what Firebirds do and why I am proud to be a part of the Palm Valley School. Please join me in not only sending light and love to those who need it right now, but in telling all your loved ones how grateful you are that they are safe, healthy, happy, and able to help those who aren't. Teaching our students to value responsibility to self and others is so important and central to the values that we hold so dearly as a school. I am proud and honored to lead such a community that values and cares for the lives of others. I am proud to be a Firebird!

Best,

Susan Rice
