On behalf of Mrs. Rice, 2/23

Dear Palm Valley Families,

It is with great pleasure that I announce our new Development Associate and Alumni Coordinator for the school, Andrea Turner. Andrea comes to us with a varied background of experiences and a true passion for education, people, and fundraising. She, along with her husband and daughter, are a welcome addition to our community. Andrea will be a valuable member of our Administrative team - helping with Fundraising and Alumni events throughout the year. Below you will find her introduction letter to the community. Please reach out to her (at aturner@pvs.org) if you are or know of an Alumni that might like to be involved in our new Alumni Council (a project she is working on with our Alumni Representative to the Board of Trustees, Colin Kirkpatrick '03) or if you wish to learn more about our upcoming fundraiser events like Golf Day, Fashion Week, or the Annual Fund.

Andrea is very passionate about her work at Palm Valley School and we are thrilled to have her here! Please join me in giving her a warm Firebird welcome!

Susan Rice
Head of School

Dear Palm Valley Families and Alumni:

I’m excited and pleased to be your new Development Associate and Alumni Coordinator. I’ve spent years in education, mainly at the college level. It’s great to be able to support the amazing work Palm Valley teachers produce with the individual attention given to our talented kids.

After growing up mostly in the Redlands area, I earned my Master’s degree in English in Riverside and set off for Los Angeles. I worked there as a writer for software companies, sports and entertainment corporations, and as editor of different websites. I’ve also worked as an adjunct instructor teaching English, journalism, ESL and other communication classes for a number of places, including Cal State Los Angeles, Pasadena City College, East Los Angeles College and Los Angeles City College, as well as several private universities.

I love to travel and have visited, worked or studied abroad in Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Venezuela, Peru, Chile, Mexico, Costa Rica, France, Spain, Germany and the Netherlands. I also enjoy reading, theater, musicals, swing dancing, and capoeira.

My husband Ben and I are proud to have our daughter Vanessa start at Palm Valley this coming fall. She’ll be a Firebird! Our family’s move to the desert is our latest adventure.

The closeness of the Palm Valley School community was evident at the February Annual Gala where I observed so many people laughing and chatting comfortably while enjoying the casino games and participating in auctions to support our Annual Fund. When so many bright and caring individuals are united to a cause, there’s nothing that can’t be accomplished.

In the coming months, I’ll be focusing on helping to make our upcoming fundraisers, including the Annual Fund, our Fashion Week event, and the Palm Valley Golf Day, an outstanding experience for all. I’m also working to make the greater desert community more aware of our unique “cradle to college” program and how PVS is such an established, proven provider of excellent education. In addition, I’ll be launching a newsletter for alumni and, along with our Alumni Rep. to the Board of Trustees, Colin Kirkpatrick, helping to form an Alumni Council to better incorporate their insight and knowledge. I’m committed to helping Palm Valley reach even greater levels of success.

Please come by my office in the middle school building if you’d like to chat, pass along any fundraising ideas, are interested in volunteering for any events, or would like to share an alumni anecdote or suggestion.

Thanks again for all you do for Palm Valley. I’m glad to help advance the school’s mission.

Respectfully yours,
Andrea Turner
