Monday Notes from the Head of School, 1/22

“The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character – that is the goal of true education.” -Martin Luther King, Jr.

Dear Palm Valley Families,

Dr. King was a great man who had a vision of what our country and world could become. As we celebrate his life's work each year, like we did last Monday, I am always reminded of how far we have come and how far we have yet to go. I am grateful for the Palm Valley School community that celebrates our differences in positive ways. When we look at people around us that we feel we are so different from, it is amazing how alike we really are at our core. Finding those common threads and connections will allow each of us to also be more comfortable looking at what makes us different. If you have not yet had an opportunity to join us for our national SEED program seminar, I strongly encourage you to do so! Our next SEED meeting will be held in the MPR for parents and faculty (adults-only) tomorrow night, January 23 at 6 pm. If you'd like to attend, please RSVP here. We hope to see you there.

It is with great pleasure to announce our new Head of Preschool, Mr. Zachary Klausz, who will be starting with us July 1. Mr. Klausz holds a B.A. in Music Technology from NYU and an M.A. in Early Childhood Development from Hunter College specializing in children's needs from infant to Grade 2. He has spent the last four years as a Head of Preschool for the Maumee Valley Country Day School in Toledo, OH. Prior to that, he taught Pre-K at several well known independent schools on the east coast, including the Chelsea Day School, the Horace Mann School, and the Friends School - all in New York City. He has served as an After-Care and summer camp director for many of these programs and is well versed in the needs of independent schools, as well as of the children and families who are served by them. He is adept in the Emilio Reggio curriculum for children, having attended many workshops in that approach and has also completed the ISACS (Independent Schools Association for the Central States) Academy for NAIS school Divisions Heads. In his interview, Mr. Klausz spoke passionately about the need for rich curriculum, most often developed through play, for preschool-aged children. He is keen on ensuring that every child who completes Pre-K is more than qualified and ready for Kindergarten and expressed a strong desire to partner with the Lower School on curriculum needs and articulation. He is thrilled to be moving to the desert with his wife and children this summer.

Our Annual Gala is well underway and we are nearly sold out. We have only about 10 seats left, so if you have not yet purchased your tickets or been invited to sit at a pre-purchased table, please visit our page here to get your seats. A reminder that the Martini Lounge After Party experience is not included in a regular ticket or table price, so please plan to join us after the dinner and auction for drinks, special lights, and a DJ to dance the night away after the Gala ends! We are also still looking for donations and a few underwriters for the event, so please contact Courtney Fisher at cfisher@pvs.org if you have any questions about donating or advertising your business in the program. This is an incredible event that you do not want to miss! Come join us in raising funds for our wonderful school!

Make it a great week!

Best,

Susan Rice
