Monday Notes from the Head of School, 10/1

"The greatness of a community is most accurately measured by the compassionate actions of its members." - Coretta Scott King

Dear Palm Valley Families,

One of the things that I love most about Palm Valley School is our traditions. One of those traditions is the annual painting of Senior Parking spots. In the lot near the Upper and Lower Schools, you will see parking spots decorated in a way that is meaningful to each of our Seniors in the Class of 2019. This tradition has been going on for many years at our school, and it is a rite of passage for these students. I am always so moved by the loving support these students receive from their parents, families, faculty, and administration as they journey through many traditions and "lasts" of their senior year. This weekend was no different, and witnessing so many parents and administrators present on Saturday to support them was very special. A special thanks to Mrs. Steinman for organizing this each year and leading the charge! I hope that each of you can take a moment to admire the handiwork of our seniors and their reserved parking spaces this year - they are very clever and creative!

It is my pleasure to announce that ticket sales are open for our annual "Sips for Success" Wine Night event. We are hosting it on campus this year, showcasing a variety of wonderful wines. Courtesy of Planks and Patina, the Lower School courtyard will be transformed into a lovely and elegant evening under the stars. This Annual gathering has become a tradition as we enjoy our beautiful fall weather, the sampling of great wines, and the great company of other Palm Valley families, alumni, community members, and guests. This event is open to the public, so invite your friends and family and join us in supporting our great school! In addition, you can now purchase an "Events Pass" for our three largest event fundraisers of the year that includes not only Sips for Success, but also our annual Gala, and our Fashion Week reception. By purchasing an Events Pass, you will be able to attend all three events and save on your attendance at each - please join us! Visit pvs.org/winenight18 to purchase.

In case you didn't yet know - we have a Buddy Program at PVS this year! While many teachers and grades have implemented "Reading Buddies" or "Math Buddies" in individual grades or classes, this program is something that we have adopted as a whole school, excluding our very youngest learners in the E-9 building who aren't able to participate yet. From our Preschool to our Senior class, we have partnered and paired up all of our students for fun activities each month. Every group had a meet and greet activity this month to get introduced to their buddies and learn a bit about one another. We had our first "Buddy Assembly" of the year this past Friday, where we sat in special buddy seating for our weekly "All-School" assembly. We said the pledge together, listened to announcements from students and staff, and sang our school Song, "We are Firebirds!" together as led by the 5th Grade Apprentice Choir. I encourage you, if you have a child in Preschool or older, to ask your child about these activities and who their buddies are. Our hope is that they will have a lot to share! Serving in a mentor capacity for younger students is an incredible learning opportunity for our older students. Conversely, learning what it means to be a Firebird from older students is a great opportunity for our younger students as well.

We want to thank you, once again, if you have already contributed to this year's Annual Fund, #FeedTheFire. Our Annual Fund is a critical part of our school and helps to support students, faculty, and programs that tuition does not cover. I am very pleased to announce that we have already reached 100% participation from our Faculty and Staff! Our Board of Trustees give their Annual Fund gifts at our Fall retreat in October, and our Parent body has already begun to contribute. We thank you if you have given already. We are hoping to reach 100% in all our major constituencies, so please consider your gift today! We need your support! You can give here or use the giving envelopes available at every front desk on campus.

Thank you for all you do for our students and community. It's good to be a Firebird!

Best,

Susan Rice
